Blackpool v Shrewsbury Town Official Matchday Thread 24.04.21

It's worrying when we say we needed a flick on from a corner to a centre half to win a game and expect to be a playoff side.

Where the F is the quality.
Goals come in all shapes and sizes. The real issue is that once we went 1 down we had almost no answer to Shrewsbury’s defensive shape. We could have played for another hour and still wouldn’t have scored.

We really need to move the ball forward quicker , and to our own players , these teams are making it difficult for us because we fuck about with the ball too much making too many backwards and sideways passes. Move the ball forward faster and don’t give them time to get back and regroup. I’m not suggesting we play hoofball, just move the ball faster .
Move the ball forwards and into space with intent, in other words. There was no sparkle, just going through the motions.

It was obvious after the first 25 mins that playing Embleton on the right was not working. We should have played Robson in the middle and moved Ward to the right. We created the chances to win this match, Ballard and Yates should have scored. Hopefully, we will get some players next week,
as we definitely need the experience of Madine and Stewart to replace Simms and Embleton in this team to have any realistic chance of promotion.

No I'm not stupid. He was very poor at Rochdale and worse today. Simms should've stayed on over Yates. Preferably both should've stayed on but Yates is offering far less than Simms at the moment. I don't buy the "he's tired" crap.
You've just confirmed you are stupid. If you had ever done physical exercise that pushes the body to it's limits, then you'd realise that however willing the mind is, you just can't get a positive response. "I don't buy the "he's tired" crap", what a load of tosh.

Comfortably the worst home performance of the season in an attacking sense. We had absolutely no ideas whatsoever, and the service to the forwards was appalling, utterly appalling. The only good ball in the entire 90 minutes came from Gabriel to Yates who should've done better.

This has been our problem all season long and we haven't ever done anything about it. We've played 10 games at home against bottom half teams, and scored 11 goals. That's absolutely dreadful for a playoff chasing side.

I'm not sure there's anyone that stood out for us, but we've sunk back into that hole we were in during the first seven games and i'd argue the last two performances have been far worse than they were back then.

Our lack of creativity and forward passing ability in the middle of the park is something that desperately needs addressing this summer. Dougall and Ward offer decent protection for the defence, but there's no goals and no chances coming from them. If Embleton and Kaikai don't get involved in the game, like today, then we have absolutely no chance of scoring. None.

We have four games to scrape together enough points for a top six place. Missing Madine, Anderson, Hamilton and Stewart for so long is going to cost us I feel, sadly. But the players we had out there today should be doing much better - if I was a professional player i'd honestly be embarrassed with some of the passing we displayed today.
Harsh criticism maybe, but i'm just saying as I see it. What was that from Ward at the end? Also near the end Robson I think was meant to play a ball back in to the box and it went nowhere near - how can you miss the box completely? It isn't a small area. Critchley is far from blameless of course but he can't do much about such poor quality on the ball from players we know do possess quality.

Just a bad, frustrating and desperate day all round. On to Tuesday where we will need to demonstrate far more urgency, and the ability to find a forward with the final ball.

Every team has a wobble during the season everyone in the top 8 has recently. We need it to be a short wobble though with so few games left, 2 wins should still do it and if you are going to lose lose 1-0 our goal difference still worth a point.

We've been shit since the second half against Lincoln, we have four matches left so plenty of time to reset things like we did in November.

Just hope that reset comes in time for us to pick up the necessary points to make the Playoffs.

I'm away to clean my golf clubs. I think it could be more exciting than watching that match.

Ita a story were all too familiar with. We see loads of other sides capable of coming back from behind, but we've struggled to score most the season.

Hardly any goals from midfield, can't rely on just Yates who has recently done nothing.

Just not enough goals or chances, or indeed quality anywhere at all.

A good and well thought out post. Especially as, at the moment, I just want to say AAAARRRRGGGHHH!
My worry is that this squad hadn't been encouraged to think for itself. There's too much reliance on the 'comfortable' pass rather than the incisive pass. There's more about not bottling it rather than going for it.

We needed to be going into the playoffs as one of the in form teams to stand any chance of promotion, Scramble over the playoff line we may do but, I think promotion is now off the cards the way have been approaching the last few games.
Get in them play offs and then add some much needed re inforcements Madine Stewart Keshi Viking

Seems to me players have fallen out of form and we've got no-one to bring in. Stewart is a big miss as is Madine for variety up top. A number of the midfield and attackers show glimpses of form but aren't capable of the consistent quality needed for a concerted play off push. We haven't the option of switching them out cos there is F all to bring in - I'm thinking Ward, Mitchell, Kaikai, Embleton, Simms. Robson offers nothing, Turton does a job but if you have to bring him on when you are chasing the game it shows the lack of resources.

Two more wins might be enough, three would do it. Wouldn't bet my house on that at the mo. 😫

Yep. The lack of goals has been obvious all season. The positive is that we seem more dangerous against the ‘better’ teams.

But based on our last two performances where the hell are they coming from?

If I hear Brett Ormerod say "It was one of those games" one more time I'm going to f****** combust!!

No Brett, it wasn't one of those games when exactly the same things happen (Or don't happen) twice in the same week against absolutely s**** teams!!

We look like a team who's season has fizzled out with nothing left to play for. Where was the encouragement and motivating from the sidelines, I didn't see anything?! No urgency at all

Dreadful on every level.

I posted before the game about taking the initiative - once again we wasted 70 minutes with Embleton in a key position. That’s down to NC.

Players are knackered, so at Rochdale he could have played Gabriel, Marv, Robson, Mitchell and Holmes. That’s down to NC.

Teams have sussed us, we can’t break down a non-footballing team. So, you mix it up, perhaps play Kaikai in a central mid role, one up top, or look to play 3 at the back. That’s down to NC.

We were nailed on, but now our final game in hand is away at Sunderland.

I still think we’ll do it, be NC needs to be doing more and better. He’s still learning, but if we can see it......
Spot on.

We look knackered and today was the game to mix it up.

Now we have Sunderland away. Not the game to mix it up.

I think one problem we have is maxwell as captain there's nobody in the middle to shake the team up when the going gets tough and need to step up a gear.

So they’ve struggled for a few games, it’s no wonder with the games they’ve had to play, plus key players out injured which has meant most of those players have to play 90 minutes, Saturday and Tuesday and Saturday etc.

Keep the faith, we’ll be in the playoffs and by that time the cavalry will be here.

One thing I've noticed (especially simms) if someone tries to put a ball in and it misses the target (so most of them) they throw their hands up and look back in frustration at the person who attempted a pass/cross, gotta get a lid on that imo.

Yeah the worry is if we get there one bit of bad luck, good play from opposition, deflection and were behind and were pretty much done for.

Is that a lack of character? Will power?

I said after the Rochdale game that I thought that the ridiculous amount of games that we've played recently and the lack of strength in the squad that we have, have inevitably caught up with us and I'm more convinced of this after today's lack of performance. The players are goosed and you can't blame them for that but Critchley is starting to bother me in that he keeps playing Jerry and others, when he more than anybody needs a rest. Let Holmes, Mitchell, Ekpiteta, Antwi, Husband and Robson start at Sunderland, as at this moment time, it's not a game that I expect us to win and the players rested will surely benefit from it. Also, as Critch is a ' hot ' coach, work on our passing ?

I know Gabriel has some talent but their goal came from him showboating up front.Clever flicks are great when you are 3 nil up but not in a tight must win game

Yep poor management imo of the recent games to be relying so much on the same players, we have had options albeit limited to get some rest in there but largely not taken it

Clueless Critchley strikes again.

We probably will be better going forward - there’ll probably be more space.

There seems to be a lack of movement with no one running off the ball, hence sideways, backwards 2 or 3 times then hoof it long to no one. I think a few of them are knackered but with all our injuries to key players there are very few experienced players on the bench to bring on.
Still got a feeling we’ll do it though by the skin of our teeth! 👍

Time to Trust and be Brave. During our unbeaten run, players who may not normally have started have come in, stepped up and done the business. We are now in a similar position because of the injuries and those same players are knackered. I agree with Devilsadvocate, for the Sunderland game, we should rest Yates, he can be on the bench, give some of the midfielders a rest, bring in the likes of Antwi, Robson and Nathan Shaw, who is full of energy and can play in defence or on the wing and is one of the best crossers of the ball. None of these let us down when played pre season, I know not totally competitive games but they did the business when called upon. For Tuesday I think we need fresh legs which will for the final few games benefit the regulars who need a breather.

Nice to know the Critchley and Yates knockers are back on form, a shame Hubby isn't on the pitch they'd have had a field day. Nothing to be proud of today I know but that's how it goes at this point in the season. Some teams can hold their nerve others can't, sadly, we are in the latter category.
