Blackpool v Swansea Official Matchday Thread 12.03.22

Great 3 points but the edge taken off it by how much they dominated possession.
I know they didn't penetrate - but nevertheless they gave us a bit of a footballing lesson.
If we could keep possession like that with our talented front line - we'd be in the play off zone for sure.
Have to disagree with that, we sat back and let them have the ball, they played all of their football in front of us, 70% possession and 1 attempt on goal.

Awful game to watch…. early goal and then Concede possession and defend for the rest of the game!,,

can’t argue with the result but I wish I could have watched it on tv so I could have turned over to something more exiting.

Seems like the Swansea tactic is to bore the opposition to death. They have one way of playing and when the other team doesn't go for the high press so they can play through midfield then they really don't seem to have a plan B - no mixing up of what they do at all. The early goal obviosuly really helped us as we had no need to be drawn into the high press. If we had won 2 or 3niltoday it wouldn't have flattered us with the chances we had despite our limited possession.

A fascinating game where Pool had to show great defensive discipline to counter Swansea’s possession based approach. Naughton and Grimes seemed to be able to create space at will, but a Pool defence (that had never played together before as a unit) were masterful, such that the dangerous trio of Paterson, Piroe and Obafemi barely got a look-in.
If we’d stuck to 4-4-2 I doubt if we’d have been as effective in stifling their attacking threat, and let’s face it we still created enough chances to have scored 3 or 4 on another day.
I’m putting this one down to another Critchley masterclass 👍 (three wins and a draw against Martin).

Bloody hell, didn't realise Swansea's head coach came from MK Dons.

I was thinking the game felt very MK Dons-esque at their place last season during lockdown, not quite as boring as we had a few more chances today but Critch has certainly sussed how to get 3 points from Russel Martin!

I think that even if we had scored another or even a couple more Swansea would have continued to play in the exact same manner. Even when chisnall was droning on about Swansea stepping up the pace they were still at best pedestrian. Seems all the Swansea players are more scared of losing possession than making a pass to get in on goal or take a shot.

An absolute master class by our manager. Picked a team and a formation to frustrate a team who dominate the ball. God knows how much possession they had, but we should have won by four.
Awful match to watch, but my god I'd hate to watch Swansea every week. Well done Critch, not easy on the eye but the plan worked almost to perfection.

Win and the match thread is 4 pages.
Lose and we'd be on P10 by now as some of our most vociferous posters, who
only find something worth commenting on when we lose, are noticably absent.
It's probably an odd comment when we only had 24% possession but it was a comfortable victory and I thought we were head and shoulders the best team.

Man of the match? Tough one, the back 4 were superb, great return from Hubby and a full 90 minutes, Sterling was absolutely brilliant as was James and Marv gave another of his composed performances the midfield 3 were excellent and Stewart standout again. Up front Bowler was superb again but should have scored at least one, Kirk was excellent but looked knackered with 20 to go and Madine had his best game in a tangerine shirt, won everything, held it up beautifully, great goal and defended well when needed to.

So for me it has to go to Gary with Dujon a close second along with Marv.

A quick shout out for Grimshaw. He may not have had many saves to make, apart from the one terrific tip over late in the second half, but he controlled his box absolutely brilliantly today, his positioning was top class and I don't think we have had as good a keeper as him since probably George Wood!! Old Maxie is going to struggle to get back in the team.
Stewart was good (but should have shot) but Marv for me - how many times did he throw himself in front of shots? A word for Grimmy too - that save at the end was incredible.

What a load of guff, footballing lesson ? Critchley gave Martin a coaching master class.
They opened us up once and that was the first time they put a long cross into the box.
We should have beat them by four clear goals, they had all the ball in the world, but did the sum total of FA with it. Please don't tell me you'd be happy to watch that possession based, no threat football every week !

It's about opinions, if they'd nicked a goal then people would have been moaning like fuck, but as they didn't it's seen as a Critchley masterclass. As u say, a load of guff. 😉 A bit more pool possession wouldn't go amiss.

Bloody Bowler 😁 Cost me a ton on an 18/1 bet builder. Pool win/ Under 2.5 goals/ Bowler score anytime.

Josh is a special player and with his input and the team grinding out results like at Stoke and the Swans the lights of the play offs are getting brighter by the week. Another 1-0 against the Blades will give us a cutting edge going into the short break ⚔️💪🧡

Unlike some I really enjoyed the game. Critch knows exactly how Swansea like to play , so set us up to play against their style. Swansea do like to play nice , neat football , a poor man’s Man City , but like others have said they had no cutting edge upfront. We could easily have thumped them 4 -0.

I get frustrated at home if in the second half we're shooting towards the North and give fans little to cheer about,

Too pissed last night to bother posting. But a fairly comfortable win. Whilst the ref in the tight shirt looks a bit of a dick I didn’t notice him much. One of the better officials.

Tippy tappy football well Swansea might as well have had Wayne Sleep playing up front in his ballet shoes.😀

I was surprised at how far back they were playing the ball and actually a few times almost presented us with a shot at goal.

An absolutely prancing ** of a ref. im surprised he didnt penalise marv at the goal, he had his arm around one player but there were two pulling on him, kind of goes to show just how physically strong he his.

Anyway back to the prancing ** of a ref, there was one point where he was running across the pitch like a dressage pony. made me chuckle. and the liner on the eastt touchline seemed not to know what offside was.
I enjoy reading this thread after it's all died down, and that was the comment of the thread for me.

It would be suicide playing a 4-4-2, defending high up the pitch because they passed the ball around defence and midfield so well, we would have been knackered by halftime. I know it was a boring watch when Swansea had the ball, but it was up and at 'em when we won possession. If Josh had made it 2-0 before halftime, they had to come forward and we'd have stuffed them 4 or 5-0. What a great header from Gary Madine, who also did a great job stopping their centre halves from taking the ball straight down the middle.
Roll on Wednesday evening.
