Blackpool v Wigan Official Matchday Thread 02.09.23

I seem to remember playing Wigan in the prem a game we really needed to win and two silly defensive mistakes cost us the game and ultimately sent us down. Defeat on Saturday would be devastating and little wonder ticket sales are poor with recent results and performances

I want to win this more than any of the games we’ve played so far this season.

We just need a bit of self belief.

Come on boys, believe.

Ticket sales not very encouraging and still plenty available even on north stand. Separate queues for us plastid (ST cards) ?
UTMP!
Ticket sales will be up when performances start to improve.
Even the Nobbers managed to shift 2600+ tickets for Stoke this weekend and that’s with the rail strike.

If it’s a 5-3-2 lineup then we’re fooked and Wigan will win 3-0.

Please Critch, have the balls to say you have been wrong with your tactics😞 and make the changes needed.

Maybe we can get things going and ex goal machine Rhodes can get one. Won't be holding my shortening breath though.

I’m hoping the midfield can start functioning and we can pass the ball forwards quickly on the ground instead of endless passing back and long cross field. I also want to see whoever has a shot at goal at the very least be on target, no skying it over on good shooting chances. Feel optimistic Rhodes will start finding the back of the net soon. No idea about Dembele but hope Apter features. Getting something will be a positive. At least the weather looks good.

Wigan's transfer business looks good. New owners not spending crazily but pretty smart.

Wigan Athletic

James Balagizi (Liverpool, loan)
Sean Clare (Charlton Athletic, free)
Callum McManaman (Tranmere Rovers, free)
Liam Morrison (Bayern Munich, loan)
Steven Sessegnon (Fulham, free)
Liam Shaw (Celtic, loan)
Jonny Smith (Burton Albion, free)
Matt Smith (Arsenal, free)
Kell Watts (Newcastle United, loan)

It’s simple, he’ll be scared to death of losing, so he’ll set up defensively and instruct eki to hit long balls to the wings. Several will go out of play, several will be snapped up by their defenders, the occasional one will bring a bit of excitement for a couple of seconds, before the groans set in.

They are going to be tougher opposition than the likes of Leyton Orient that’s for sure.

Here's my guess for the starting 11 ... I hope I'm wrong.
Grimmy.
Casey, Marv, Hubby.
Connolly, Norburn, Morgan, Weir, Hamilton.
Beesley, Dale.

The players have to be much more positive and not look so bloody worried. Critchmeister needs to fire them up and go for it.

I would like to see something like:
Grimshaw
Lyons Pennington Casey Husband
Weir Norburn Carey
Dembele Rhodes Kouassi
4-3-3 showing some attacking ambition, make Wigan worry about us & leave the ground with some pride

I expect to see something like:
Grimshaw
Casey Ekpiteta Husband
Lyons Norburn Dougall Weir Hamilton
Beesley Dale
3-5-2 set up trying not to get beat, show hee-haw attacking intent & leave the ground with Wigan laughing at us

Not what we wanted to read...
Maloney at Wigan hoped to have the one missing piece in his jigsaw filled today. It looks like he's got his man. Sadly, he's travelling with the team tomorrow and is available to play 😢
'Martial Godo (plays both wings & scores goals) admitted the chance to play for such a 'historical club' in a 'beautiful stadium' made his decision to join Wigan Athletic on loan from Fulham an easy one'.

Totally agree. Team selection today will be interesting based on recent disappointments.

3-5-2 today and a loss, I will be able to hear the boos from a football tournament in Lytham.

Critchley has to change things. First home game missing today and if being honest, quite happy about that as too stressful watching this rubbish at present.

Travelling so not watched us since opening game so missed all the negative stuff I’ve read about on here, should get the chance this afternoon to see it after which I will doubt be chipping in with all the moaning going on🤷🤔🤦‍♂️

I reckon Critch has gone all Ted Lasso and been working on total football all week with a lighbulb moment that Dembele was the missing piece. We're in for a treat this afternoon 😃.

He won't change, he's happy with performances,

I was really looking forward to taking in the game this week, even after going to watch the Lincoln and Wolves debacles.

Woke up this morning really deflated after the lack of activity in the window and the style of football were churning out - decided to give the 220 mile round trip today a miss - I’ll keep updated on here!

Bloody shame that but understandable. I think most people feel the same, we need to get the fun and the buzz back somehow.

Bought my brother and nephew a ticket for today, lets hope Critchley gets the players up and at them.

Could be the day we get our mojo back💪💪

4-1 Weir brace, Marv back heel and after they pull one back to go 3-1 and chase the game, a late cameo goal from the Scottish Messi on his debut. The north stand and Critch fist pump in unison at the end. Then I woke up

Someone on Twitter just said that we won't score today, but Apter will score for Tranmere and now I'm convinced that's gonna happen.

Reactions: no9
Hoping 433 Formation today with dembele left, CJH RIGHT and Rhodes in middle

back 4 from right to left , Lyon’s. Pennington , casey , husband

midfield 3 from norburn , Morgan , Carey

any takers on my team lol

Let's see if fan favourite Casey gets the same treatment as Marv when given no one to pass to.

It could be a 433
connolly at RB husband at LB
CJH on one side with Beesley on other with Rhodes up top
think it’s me hoping 🙏 lol
