Blue Sky Thinking?

As an older supporter of the Mighty Pool, I often reminisce about the old days when I first started my obsession with Blackpool FC in the late 1950s. Talk today is about team formations, 433, 442. 4132 and so on. I wonder what would happen if a manager had the courage to turn out a team with the "normal" 50/60s line up of 2 full backs, 3 wing backs and 5 forwards? Would confusion reign?

It would be like a cricket score but very entertaining 🤣.
I get confused now, when managers refer to - 'he's playing the number 10 role' (that was inside left) or 'he's also good in the number 8 role' (that was inside right .... heroic Tony Green) etc. As most managers wouldn't have been born during that 'attacking football' era, what are they referring to?

The old style formation worked a treat for Joe Smith for over 20 years. I heard his team talk was always " You can beat this lot today no problem." Then Morty would say " Go on Joe tell us some jokes."😄
