Booster vaccine shots now looking more likely

The latest data from Israel, which was the first to get high vaccination levels but now has increasing cases again, shows that the efficacy of the vaccines against the transmission of Covid from the initially vaccinated people has deteriorated quite dramatically. Those vaccinated first back in January now only have a 16% efficacy against transmission whereas people vaccinated in April still had a 75% transmission efficacy. So it is looking like booster shots will be needed in future to stop transmission rates in order to lower case numbers.

The good news though is that efficacy against serious illness, rather than transmission, remains high at 91%.

Whether it’s Israel or the U.K., we need to shift our gaze from this obsession with case numbers, so long as the number of deaths and severe health outcomes can be minimised.

If you looked at any endemic virus (common cold, sickness bugs, flu etc..) and monitored the development of cases through a typical epidemic cycle it would look no different to Covid…
