Booths scrapping self-service check outs

I was in there on Saturday and asked a checkout person why they had gone. She whispered to me that a lot of the older customers didn't understand how to use them !!! ( she also mentioned a chap who comes in and asks about what's the best Kebabs and pies, who then nicks a bag when you're not looking !! )

It will be to combat the epidemic of shoplifting were apparently suffering.
I went to use a self service checkout in Aldi but realised the previrus users shopping was still on screen so used another. As I was leaving an assistant came running after me asking if I’d just used that checkout. No it was still in use so I used another i said and went off. It was only later on I realised someone must have scanned and bagged their shopping then left without paying. That takes some nerve. Maybe they had someone distracting the assistant.

You must not have been in the Booths in Lytham then!! Usually about 5 minutes for them to scan 2 items & take payment!! Avoid at all costs if on on your lunch break and only 1 till open!!
I gave up going there on my lunch break some time ago as I couldn’t cope with navigating my way around all the dithering old biddies wandering around like some zombie apocalypse.

All stores in Lancashire..just the 2 in the Lake District to keep them…Windermere and Keswick
What about the other 5 in Cumbria (Kendal, Kirkby Lonsdale, Milnthorpe, Penrith, Ulverston), the 2 in Cheshire (Hale Barns, Knutsford) and the 3 in Yukshire (Ilkley, Ripon, Settle) ?

There was me thinking this board would be in full support of a business replacing technology with people….. bet Mick Lynch wishes the railways were run by Booths management 😉

I like Booths and admire them for making this decision even though I only ever used the self checkout there.

The self service ones in Poulton haven't been on for weeks. Booths announce getting rid of them and suddenly last night they're working again🤷‍♂️
Yeah , I was in yesterday and noticed they were working for the first time in weeks. Bizarre timing.
I was told by a member of staff that the reason they were shut down was due to thefts as Wizaard points out.
They are struggling , a proposed sale to Waitrose fell through as Waitrose only wanted Lytham and possibly Windermere.
I dont mind doing away with the self service so long as they employ good quality quick staff. Some of the Poulton staff are very slow and quite like a chat.

Lynch is a throwback to 1970's union leaders.
He is not bothered about finding solutions as long as he is in the limelight.

Usually, when I get behind an older customer at Booths they are playing pin number bingo as they try and remember the number.:)

On a more serious note Booths have realized that the only way they will survive is to appeal to the older customers with money,
they also have started to have meet-up groups for pensioners in the cafe. It's just a shame that they have cut out lots of the things that
made them special before covid, such as free samples of bread and olive oil, and free coffee if you have a Booths card. They really have to
concentrate on giving the best experience and products if they are to survive, as they cannot hope to compete on price with Aldi, and Lidl or compete with Tesco, Aldo, and Morrisons as they move online.

They got rid of them in Garstang a few months ago, it absolutely does make a difference to the speed of service. I go to Aldi around the corner now because it's quicker.

I've never seen anyone else at the checkput in Booths St Annes. It must be the quietest supermarket in England.
I'm gonna make a conscious effort to use the St Annes store more. I like that this a NW business that is trying to go against the flow.

Went yesterday. A very pleasant experience. Shop was busy but no delays at the checkout. (I normally use the self checkout, first time used a human one in years!)

You'll be one yourself someday.
We use Booths a lot (Poulton).
Don't get big crowds and usually quickly served.

Apologies, badly worded. The point I was making was why do so many pensioners go shopping between 12 and 2 when those of us who are working are rushing around in our lunch break. They have all day after all.

If they are doing away with self-service tills workers would have to wait while they all have a chat at the manned tills. Not a problem for me any more though as I’ve stopped going there at lunchtimes and I expect more to follow suit.
