Brentford and Brighton - using data analytics

Tottenham could not have been using data analytics when they signed the player named in the article Janssen as he was a complete flop at Spurs.😂

This is what we need to be doing and we need a sporting director that knows how to implement such a system. We don't want to be relying on players the manager knows or is aware of. Brighton consistently find gems like Caicedo and Mac Allister for next to nothing and were extremely well prepared with a replacement when they lost their manager. Compare that to our preparation and scouting and it's night and day. Hopefully the new sporting director knows what they're doing.

Moneyball is a great movie, and quite a simple premise. There is so much data available, more than ever before, and we also have access to massive compute power. It's natural that clubs will start using ML to analyse and gain insights into performance both individual and collective.

When there's so much financial risk attached to football these days, I'm amazed everyone isn't using data. I actually thought I read that we are signed up to some kind of analytics but can't remember where I saw it. It isn't the same companies that Brighton and Brentford use though.

If it’s that easy/obvious, why isn’t everyone using it?
However, I am interested.
Congratulations to Brentford, Brighton and AZ. They are using it BUT they also have the people with the “brains” to manipulate it.

Brighton spend millions on a global scouting network as well

It's a completely unrealistic comparison

For anyone interested in this sort of thing "Expected Goals: The story of how data conquered football and changed the game forever" by Rory Smith is a cracking read.

It is actually more from Tony Bloom's algorithm that can't be replicated. This gives statistics about all players across the globe and the scouts they have are then sent to watch those players who have been greenlighted.

It is not that they spend millions on a global scouting network. Not sure where you got that from. Perhaps you just presumed it because they are a premier League club?

Of course, we wouldn't be able to operate exactly the same, but the point is to use data to pick out the strongest players instead of relying on feelings or the connections that our manager may have.
