Brett Ormerod Exclusive

I spoke to Brett for about an hour on Friday afternoon about his Blackpool career - I thought a bit of positive nostalgia is something a bit different from the current on-field situation.
What a wonderful chap he is - funny, self-deprecating and with a remarkable story to tell with the plan being to put it up as a long read this evening.
However, with what has occurred over the past 24 hours it just feels a bit 'off' at the moment to have a piece so celebratory so holding it back for now (it's not time sensitive anyway).
I have published the following quotes though and when I looked I couldn't believe Pool have had NINE red cards this season! Seems to be a really big issue this season.
“They’re (Blackpool) are already punching above their weight in terms of budget and infrastructure,” Ormerod added.

“But the sending-offs have been a big thing this season - it’s hard enough to win Championship games but if you’re down to 10 men it’s even tougher.

“It’s happened too many times and they’ve thrown points away which you can’t do when you are down near the bottom.

If you want to read the full piece it's here: Blackpool’s ill-discipline has cost them this season says former legend Brett Ormerod
When the full piece is out will post up on this thread. I am also in the process of speaking to other legends and if there are any suggestions of who you want to read about please let me know!

I do think that playing 10 v 11 as regularly as we have makes it more difficult to get a result. Not sure it matters who the opposition is.
It does show a general lack of individual discipline, organisation and a lack of on field leadership.
Not the only reasons we are where we are.

Yeah fed up also. Bournemouth get 9k in the Prem. We are more than big enough to compete in the championship
True - but they've had PL money which they have spent in the Championship. What they did in last year's January Transfer window was ridiculous.
If only Blackpool could have one season in the PL, take the money and reinvest it wisely (sarcasm)

That’s a different take on it… I’m not convinced tbh. I think the sending offs have resulted from a combination of poor organisation (under Appleton) and incredibly shit referees.
I thought it was a different take as well - had to go away and double-check it. Mick seems to have cut that out element out a bit other than Swansea away but as you said, probably not the only reason.

We might have had a few bad refs but you can`t blame poor officials for most of our red cards that`s just self pitying and delusional. We are well clear of the next worst offenders which underlines there`s a problem here.

There was a significant problem (under Appleton) as we had very little organisation / structure. Players regularly forced to make rash challenges as a result.

Who are your worst offenders for bookings/sendings off then?

The fact that Tella wan't sent off yesterday is what grinds with me. The cynical hacking down of Gabriel was a red on it's own if you take into consideration it was virtually identical to the foul that Carey was sent off for at Turf Moor. The difference was that the Burnley player was sent off for a violent retaliation on Carey so the ref bottled it and sent Carey off too. Similar with Lavery at Bramhall Lane who did very little to get sent off for apart from being body slammed to the ground by their goalkeeper.

Well done Brett. You were brilliant for us. The amount of sprinting across the pitch, chasing headed flicks that you did, especially during your first spell here, made me feel tired just watching. You mentioned your winning goals in the playoff finals V Orient and Cardiff. In a way, you made up for a match between the two of them which was the last nail in the coffin for Blackpool dropping into the third and fourth divisions for almost 30 seasons, Orient winning 1-0 at Cardiff . Most Blackpool fans at the time knew how that match would end up, even though Cardiff had only lost two at home, and Orient only won once away prior to that match.

I agree it is far to easy to lay the blame with Appleton and at the refs door. The players have to take some responsibility, it is not rocket science if you are on a yellow card, you don’t do anything stupid that will get you a second yellow card. Madine has been unprofessional and stupid with two off the ball incidents, one he was red carded for and the second incident was picked up later and he received a retrospective ban. In addition to playing with only 10 men there are also the games that the player’s miss due to suspension. Madine had to serve a 4 game ban recently and I think Ekpiteta did as well for 2 red cards. The players’ indiscipline has definitely been an issue this season, I wonder if they are fined by the Club as that would be a deterrent.
