Broadband advice.

I know this topic comes up pretty regularly but as Virgin won't let me downgrade my current package to broadband only have given them 30 days notice of leaving. Been looking around and the Now broadband looks pretty good at a decent price.
Anyone on here use it and any other recommended providers. Only 2 of us in the house so don't need expensive mega fast speeds. Thanks for any answers.

I would reply with ideas, but it's on the wrong forum.
 
What do you do with broadband at home? How many devices do you have?

I'm happy to look on your behalf and give you my suggestions.

Are you in an area that now has the option of fibre to the premises or still stuck on a copper phone line?

Virgin wouldn’t work in my house, but they refused to repay my one month deposit. I wouldn’t throw stones at them, but if I ever see Richard Branson in the airport I will throw bloody stones at him.🤭
 
i had exactly this with Virgin about 12 months ago did not want to offer to recontract broadband without a phone line which we no longer used. Same as you i served notice to leave and from the next day i started to get calls from the retention team, which i ignored for a week. Once i took the call i quoted the deals for new subscribers and informed them of their terrible customer service for existing customers. the outcome was i got the broadband only at the speed i wanted but at half the price of the deal for new customers, i did have to commit for 18 months but was fine with that. I would suggest looking at the deals available for new customers and standing your ground. to try for a better deal.

If this does not work you are limited to either an isp that is on the BT copper/fibre network, 6g internet(not heard much that is positive about these) or if you are lucky you will be in an area that already has full fibre either BT or City Fibre(cover some of Blackpool already) who are rolling out at a snails pace everywhere else.
 
It depresses me to say this but broadband only has to be BT for reliability and the best speeds, just about every techie I know uses it. I think the price is bloody outrageous but new customers get good deals.
 
I’m with Talk Talk & have been for a few years (Admittedly in Leeds). No problems at all, not a gamer, but no buffering whilst streaming tv etc. Fair pricing & a quality Amazon Eero router comes as part of the deal.

Just the 2 of us occasionally have the 2 grand Children on tick tock or playing games. But normally I'll be on something like this the wife will be on candy crush or face timing one of the daughters and obviously would want to watch streaming on TV.

Yes we got fibre but that's with Virgin so don't know wether it can be a straight switch or a new provider would have to run in their own cable?.

I went from Virgin to Vodaphone on fibre last year, broadband only. Paid less per month and got a 90 voucher for Sainsbury’s 👍
 
The last time this came up on here, someone mentioned Shell energy

I got their fiber 100MBPS as standard for £26.99 a month plus I also got a £125 gift card, which knocked it down to about £17 a month
Few weeks after joining, Shell sold out to Octopus Energy but you can still get this deal....it does seem to come out every few months
Open Reach fitted fiber to the house and most (if not all the time) I'm getting +75MBPS in peak hours.

Previously I was on Sky's....super fast deal.....which then turned into their super, super fast deal......which then became their Amazing Super Fast Deal
Lucky to get more than 20MBPS....and when I complained they 'checked the line' and said....Your average is 30MBPS....but I was paying for 100MBPS

Even though I was paying for 100MBPS, if I wanted 100MBPS, I had to pay $36,99 for their Unbelievable, Amazing, Super, Super Fast Deal....

Any deal around 60-70MB is more than enough for you.

Can't really go wrong with BT and because they generally own the infrastructure I'd suggest it's probably more reliable and quicker to resolve issues.
 
I've tried comparison sites & where we are it seems Virgin is the only fast option (which we need) I really would like to get shut after a spat with them last year. Apparently BT is coming soon with full fibre, I won't hold my breath.
 
Where I live the fibre infrastructure was installed by City Fibre and you can choose your own ISP. I went for Vodafone 100mbps for under 27 per month. Get close to the top speed with no contention almost all the time. Not saying it is perfect but not stupid money either.

Shell Energy is no longer. I think their customers were moved to talk talk.

Speeds are a con anyway. The figures quoted are for a wired connection direct to the router, not through walls etc
