By Elections

A fantastic night for the Tories, retaining Lying Bastards old seat.

Apparently something to do with Ulez. (I thought he played for Liverpool)

If this trend is repeated throughout the country, they'll be returned with a massive majority.

Not so. Applying the 6.7% swing to labour across all seats would result in a hung parliament so no massive majority there.that would be the best case scenario for the tories as you can see that the swing away from them in the other two by-elections were much greater and not always towards Labour.

The tories are still on course for a spanking in the general election but not winning that seat was a slap in the face for Starmer.

I think this might be your woosh! moment.

Labour deliberately held back in Somerset to allow for a tactical Lib Dem win. The 6.7% average doesn't really apply.

The trait ( love that word) that gives me hope from the by-elections is that, despite Starmer threatening anyone with excommunication if they cooperate with other parties, the good old British Public can work out for themselves who to vote for to get rid of the Tories.

Next we need to get him to agree to Conference Resolution and back PR. This will stop any party of the Left or Right ruining our country with extremist policies voted by a minority. Balance and negotiation are required in a grown up democracy.

PR is a more pure form of democracy I agree but I’m not sure it inevitably leads to compromise and a happy middle ground. Actually it may well empower minority/extremist parties in a way FPTP doesn’t.

Imagine, for instance, a House of Commons with the Tories and Labour with far fewer seats. But Lib Dems, Greens and a UKIP/Reclaim style extremist party with more.

Then imagine a Tory and more right wing party going into coalition. And voting through whatever they want to do.

Or a Labour and more left wing party if that’s your nightmare.

Then look at countries like Israel where the right have more leverage than perhaps they should. Or Italy. Or potentially Spain with Vox.

Overall I still support PR as it is a truer reflection of democracy. But don’t be naive enough to believe it’s the solution to all our problems and will necessarily lead to a wonderful world of compromise and happy balances. It could actually result in a very different outcome.

PR sounds a good idea, no wasted votes, but we could end up like Italy with no decisive governments. Also the two main parties will never vote for it(turkeys-Christmas 🤷🏽‍♂️) can’t wait to see Labour manifesto.
