Can we build on it?

Not bad but defo 2nd best. We let the opp in the first half have at least 3 really good chances - they take them and game over. Weve got to be more consistent throughout the 90 mins.

Sometimes it's much harder to play against the hoof ball teams as we are proving. We fall into the trap of going down to their level but against the better teams even counting the Forest games we play and look much better. Maybe we are just missing a couple of real leaders for them games to lead by example and really compete and be more physical. I said it on another thread but an Andy Morrison type at the back or in centre mid would make a huge difference to this team.

To be honest Moss Bros, I don't care about Tuesday. Although that's the 'problem' with winning today... what's the old saying 'its the hope that kills you'...
i'm not that bothered either tbf but that's our prerogative as fans. it's the players mentality that really matters here - and let's face it, as a pro, who doesn't want to play at wembley? that should be all the motivation they need, though i do appreciate that there are other factors at play to consider, not least the hotpot next saturday.

Sometimes things just go your way, today a penalty and a deflected winner, in our favour. We've had it the other way round and its gone against us.

We can build on it, it could go the other way, it's what makes football so interesting and equally, frustrating.

Lets not get too carried away but we’ve had this false dawn too many times this season. We play very well against proper footballing teams but we’ve been absolutely fukcin shite against the clogger teams and this is what will cost us this season. Don’t get me wrong I’m nothing like A Tense Gimp but I’m still reeling from last Tuesday but I’m enjoying todays win without doubt!

in all good faith, have you lost your positive pills? used to recall lots of upbeat/glass half-full stuff from you. please don't tell me that this board has turned you into a hardened cynic. 😐
Not about being cynical for me! Do I think we can? Absolutely I think we can. The players are certainly good enough IMO.

Do I think we will? The way the season has gone indicates that we won't.

"Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me."

How many times this season have we had a brilliant result like this and then followed it up with a flat, uninspiring performance? Too many times. We're 33 games in now and unless something drastic changes I just can't see us turning the corner needed in order to really kick on.

Would love to be proven wrong though of course.

can't disagree with any of that tbf.

thing is, after today, i'm kind of thinking (hoping) that the penny has dropped with the players (maybe the gaffer too). it happens to us all in life at some point - focus and impetus, that is - for loads of different reasons.

It all depends on Critchley. He will be mightily relieved tonight. Let’s hope he draws the right conclusions and isn’t tempted to think this is the result of his tactics coming good at last. It came from us actually taking the game to the opponent not his first half business as usual approach and some very overdue luck.

and talking of shrewsbury away, i remember going there in feb/march 2001 with our kid: took ages to get there, open terrace, cold and wet, abject performance (much like tuesday), got beat. we've no chance of going up we said (we were mid-table then). we snuck into the play-offs on the last day of the season and the rest is history. just sayin...

I've never seen us win against Shrewsbury in their 'new' ground. In fact, I don't think anyone has.

About time that changed.

I was looking at the fixtures and thinking just that (ISH). Its the games against Shrewsbury and Northampton that are as important as 'big' games. It's the 'should be beating' teams that we've been utterly dog shit against.

If we play as we did in the 2nd half weve a chance.... if we play like we did in the first we're doomed to never leave 8th place.
Long-shanks, you've just given me an inspired thought. To help shift them on from their seemingly entrenched current league placing, why not put the entire playing squad on a diet consisting solely of (to use a spot of poetic licence) - 'After 8th' Mints? I know it's perhaps a case of 'clutching at straws' but we've basically to do whatever it takes to help progress us on from our present league standing ... And what better way could there be than getting them to gorge themselves on 'aptly named' choccies?

We have a really tough set of games ahead with 5 of the next 8 away and games against Bolton, Pompey, Derby, Wigan, Orient and Northampton in those 8. Needs to be a change in mentality to get the points we need from them, perhaps the ructions of the last week and the fact that games are running out will change our approach. We may as well just go for it, attack teams and try to get on a roll. Get the fans on board etc. Big task though.

I've said all along that those are the type of games that give us the best chance of winning. Bring it on.

Looking forward to all those bookmarked threads that people were going to throw at me when I said the season wasn't over😉

I don't disagree but I think we have to drop the self conscious way of playing like we are n the training pitch and play more instinctively. I had a feeling we would get a draw at least yesterday, and that we would get a winner after we equalised. Because that determination was there yesterday, and it's been absent too often this season. The group needs to decide that it is going to go all out for promotion and play with intent, every game, 90+ minutes. Quit the fannying around mentality based on training routines.

I said after Tuesday that they were weak, mentally and physically.

For once, yesterday they showed some mental fortitude after conceding a poor goal and that belief grew the longer the game went on.

It's important to win on Tuesday now, to keep that belief going, with a building confidence into the League game against the Trotters.

Winning builds confidence, not systems.

Hard to disagree with that voy. We're so much better when we are proactive and take the game to the opposition. Always have been under NC. Doesn't mean we have to attack recklessly either. Just play on the front foot.

This is what gets me though Straighters... Where exactly is the disconnect?

If you listen to Critchley, he regularly seems top suggest that 'taking the game to the opposition' is what he wants them to do (and we're almost certainly at our best when we do that...

I have often used it as an example (but it's a good one) but if you look at the Away game at Fulham that was stopped for a while after 10 minutes, the Blackpool side that started the first 10 minutes and the Blackpool side that came out after the restart were night and day (again it was down to intent - and obviously on the Managers instruction, because he said as much after the game)...

You could say similar things about the second half Vs Fleetwood (although in fairness I really don't think there was much wrong with our first half) and similarly at home vs Peterborough....

What we have to do in my opinion is learn to weather the storm a whole lot better and compete and be resilient during the periods of the game where we might not quite be able to get fully into our rhythm and play exactly how we would like to play... Where we find ourselves in a bit more of a battle.... In those games I wonder if we maybe need to learn to just be a bit more patient and learn how to take the steam out of the opposition.
