Cannot remain in power

Biden went off script with this comment about Putin, a comment we probably all agree with, but one which has caused huge anxiety in the US and Europe. Richard Haass, veteran diplomat, said this has made a difficult situation more difficult, and a dangerous situation more dangerous. He goes on to say this will confirm in Putins mind what he’s believed all along.

We are not asking for regime change are we Joe?
It’s what almost the whole world wants to see but daren’t say. I’d love Biden to balls it out and play it…..

It’s a shame that he lets the odd thing slip. We know he wants it, we know we want it, but it will fuel Putins already paranoia addled mind now, unfortunately.

Good shout by Biden at the end of a historic speech.

Biden knows Putin better than anyone over the last 20 years or so.

It keeps the “butcher” guessing.

Was it off script or not?

I must admit he may be a bit off his game now and again due to age, but I do like Biden 👍

He was on his game last night with his powerful speech.

He never once said President Putin. Always Putin, lier etc

It was a calculated speech in no uncertain terms.

Another US$1Bn in military aid etc. Putins mob will be taking note of that

Totally agree and yet most on this board criticised Trump for speaking out of term. 🙄

The biggest threat to Putin is his steroid abuse. I wouldn’t be surprise if his heart and liver gave up the ghost before too long.

Even with the mad scientists they’ve got there, he’s a ticking clock for sure

It was a ridiculous thing to say even though we all know it's true. It just isn't the sort of thing the POTUS should be saying, hence the back tracking immediately, massive gaff in my opinion. I don't rate USA politics any better than Russian to be honest, 2 super powers with absolutely bell end leaders.

Putin 69..mental/deranged.
Biden 79..clearly dementia or similar has kicked in..
At there respective ages they should be retired and off enjoying life….
In the uk we generally retire mid 60s etc..yet these world leaders are ancient…😎

You should listen to his full speech from last night …. About 30 mins

No gaffs at all. He knows how to sort Putin.

Liz Truss also yesterday said we will lift sanctions if you pull out the Russian troops.

Putins hangers on will want to be back in the Med this summer with their 150m yachts not stuck in the Seychelles with nowt to do except fishing and sunbathing 😎

It’s the “grand plan” from the west/NATO 😉

One comment from a 30 minute speech. Boris makes far more gaffes than that and his apologists on here defend it as 'isolated'.

Biden knew what he was doing and knew it would play well with his audience at the time and even back home.

What Biden says matters a lot more than whatever spews from Johnson's brain though, he's also supposed to be the elder statesman, not some gobshite like his predecessor.

Sorry but you say that like it’s unreasonable to suggest Trump was a self serving, far right, moron who suggested using bright light inside the body to cure covid. A man who made lying a full time occupation and who launched a coupe d’etat when he legitimately lost an election. I think criticism of him was both extremely easy and completely justified.

The idea of Trump in charge with this current crisis going on scares the be’jesus out of me, except it wouldn’t have happened as Putin was happy as Larry with a devisive loony running the US.

He knew exactly what he was saying and the backtrack was for show. Biden sowed the seeds of regime change in Russia and it was planned.

As for the comment about Boris saying that. It's akin to a 6 yo wanting to fly to the sun on a flying horse or as likely as a chocolate tank firing repeated missiles.

I hope you’re right, and I think you might be, but I must admit I don’t like these people playing games. The stakes are extremely high.

Indeed he was happy probably wouldn’t have invaded Ukraine either. 👍

Well said Joe
A massive problem with the world today is that what the majority think is never said allowed and all we hear is what the minority (who are all do gooders who have spent their entire life sheltered from the real world) have to say.
This is what we want (and need) to hear, especially from a top world leader.
A lot seem to forget that these leaders have people who write the speeches for them and these speech writers are very talented and intelligent people who know exactly what is going on and how to challenge it.
Biden isn’t a puppet for these people and if he had thought this speech was not suitable to fit the occasion then he would not have said it.
The more pressure that is put on Putin, whether physical or mental, then the speedier a resolution to this barbaric act will be found.

Exactly.

It was a message to the Russian Generals, FSB bigwigs and Oligarchs that there’d be no push back from the US or the West if they decided to effect a regime change.

I’d be careful what door knobs you touch Vlad.

Except NATO don't want the ultimate 'speedy resolution'.

They managed to tip toe through the cold war without nuclear armageddon by the skin of their teeth and more through luck than judgement most of the time, no one wants a return to bombers in the skies waiting for the order.

I’m kicking myself for engaging in a politics thread on a message board, I really am, but are you suggesting all the little things I mentioned, like a violent coupe, should be overlooked if the unstable mob boss in the Kremlin, an angry Soviet empire fantasist who is trying to get the old bloc back together before he dies, is kept happy? He might not have invaded Ukraine this week, but with Trump ripping up NATO you don’t see any long term danger that could have ensued?

I can’t believe we still discuss Donald Trump as if there were Pros and Cons! We’d be safer with Donald Duck in the White House.

And with that, I’m going to run away back to the football forum!!

It's interesting.
I wonder what intelligence, if any, has prompted this remark - if it was based on something from inside the Kremlin then there could be very good news soon. I really hope so. I can't believe that Biden just went off piste.

Russia drops calls for Ukraine to be 'denazified' and is prepared to let it join EU -report

In further indications that Russia is scaling down its aims in the conflict, a report this morning has suggested it it willing to make two key concessions.
Calls for Ukraine to be "denazified" - widely understood to be code for regime change - have been dropped by Russia as part of ceasefire negotiations, sources have told The Financial Times.
Four people briefed on the ongoing talks told the newspaper that the Kremlin was also prepared to let Kyiv join the European Union if it abandoned its drive to join NATO.
One of the sources claimed Russia was changings both its military pressure and its demands every day.
It comes as Ukraine and Russia prepare to begin more peace talks in Turkey later today.

Let’s hope a ceasefire is coming ….. 🙏🏻

Let’s hope so, but probably the sticking point will be the Donbass region, including Mariupol. Putin will want to keep those and Ukraine probably won’t agree. Maybe there’ll be some sort of compromise there, but that would reward invasion.
