Car Insurance

I got a new car recently and paid a new premium with LV. Rang them up recently on a need for a change and ended up with a £350 refund backdated; without even asking for it. Outstanding.

I had a renewal quote today for my car insurance due next month with the AA, who I had used and negotiated annually for a number of years and have over 10 years NCB. My wife had added one of my sons to the insurance last year when I was in hospital, so I had expected an increase (he has been driving for over 10 years and has a clean record) and costs had gone up generally. They quoted a whopping 52% increase with the existing underwriter. I had already been on the various comparision sites to get some quotes and the cheapest one was an increase of 5% (£22) on my current insurance. I then phoned the AA for a 'conversation' about an unacceptable renewal quote and I actually told them the best quote and that if they could get close to it I would stay. They intitially offered a revised figure with a 36% iincrease. I said I wasn't interested in anything like that figure. Within 10 minutes they had changed the underwriter to the AA themselves and lo and behold the increase was now just 7%. (£30). That was just £8 more than the lowest quote I had got, so I went with that revised figure with the AA. Decent result for an hours work.

Now it's either to do with making up for lost earnings during Covid, or it's because claims are more expensive with more electric cars - or it's profiteering.
Quite the opposite, surely, much fewer miles travelled during "lockdown", thus much fewer accidents and claims, so insurance payouts were reduced as a result, so much better earnings.

More likely, insurance premiums were held down during Covid because of the above, now we're (more or less) back to normal payouts are going back up, and we're getting 3 years of increases and some pretty steep inflation all at once.

Our house insurance went up 30% this year, tried the comparison sites and got it down to just a few quid more than the previous year - with the same company ffs 🤨

Just had my home and contents renewal through - this year £14 p/m, renewal £34 p/m.

142% increase. 😲

Will spend half hour tomorrow getting a better one - hopefully.
