Football Insider saying it will be a loan. Guessing that means Mcnally isn't happening now!

We've just got rid of the bad, so all we need now is the ugly!
Doesn’t sound very promising to me, not a single appearance for Brentford and only 2 when on loan at Sheffield utd, and got a red card. Don’t we need someone oven ready, rather than a guy who will need time to get to match fitness.

What’s the saying he’s not even on the grass yet.

Just come back from a knee injury he got in his Sheff Utd loan and is in a Brentford squad where they haven't lost for ages in the Prem.

We're not going to find an ever-present rock solid giant quick centre half who's comfortable with the ball at his feet for free in January in the middle of a relegation battle. There's going to be something wrong with whoever we get linked with.

We have to cast the net, it may well be our first choices go elsewhere. With Marv out and Williams off, we may need to register Big Mick if the recruitment team can't sort something this week!!

I like that bit in the Football League World piece...."He is a defender who is dominant in the air and comfortable with the ball at his feet"

He missed much of 2022 with a knee cartilage problem.
But the fact that he was an unused sub for Brentford's Boxing Day match v Spurs suggests
A) He must be match fit (or close to), and
B) He should be halfway decent at our level

I think he was meant to be Brentford's attempt at succession planning for if Ethan Pinnock (their Ekpiteta) got sold. But then they got promoted and focus changed to needing Prem starters and experience rather than cashing in on assets to build themselves up. They signed Ben Mee last summer.

Seem to remember him being a main stay in Brentford's promotion season, but I just had a look and he really wasn't.
Appears to have had a few injury problems for the last two years.

Could be a great player but, urghh why would we do this and take a chance on another loan with serious injury problems in the last two years. When they're already under contract and struggle with injury but we need to throw them into the fight, that's one thing, but to sign them and hope they're in for a relegation battle, hmmm.

I've no idea what's going on behind the scenes, there does seem to be more coherent decisions being made now, but given the last 12 months of poor transfers, I really hope this one, if it happens, is a success.

Flint, and recalling Tharme to me on the face of it seems a more logical path.

Focus needs to be on the next 3-4 months just to try and get out of a mess.

Try for loads of different centre halves who might be available and willing to come and do a job. And if one or two come off then it's something.

Big clear out in the summer for either the championship or league one. And then a rebuild. And if they fail that then we're in the wrong hands.

Not sure about recalling Tharme, if memory serves, we got him from Southport, & he has been on loan at Accy?, hardly oven ready Championship fodder?
He seems like a really good lad who can now go on and make a career in the EFL. But the sum total of that move seems to be to have bought a player for Accrington at the moment. As they wanted to sign him from Southport but didn't have the money. So we jumped in, left him where he was for six months and then loaned him to them.

We'll know next season if there was any sort of plan to make him a first team starter here, but it doesn't feel like there is.

Yeh I understand that, and you have a good point.
All I'm saying is, we tried the year long version of this a few months a go. As much as I back the board and the club, jesus it was a disaster.

This transfer feels like a mix of Williams, Fiorini and Corbeanu all rolled into one. If it comes off, I'm more than happy to be wrong, he plays 20 games and is a rock.

Just feels like more of the same to me, after the Ward contracts & temp resign where he did nothing - Birdcutt's signing - The Rhys Williams debacle - Injury proneitis amongst Gabriel, Fiorini, Beesley, Marv et al and how could I forget Weetabix knee Kevin Stewart I just can't see why we'd even contemplate this.
All transfers come with risk and potential reward, but given he's got two years of virtually no football behind him because of injury and considering the examples I state above, it's not something I'd even contemplate for us this season.

I only stated that as, I saw him in 3 or 4 preseason games and looked better in those than anything I saw from WIlliams, Acccy fans rate him. He's our player, we may as well see what he's got, think he's 24 now as well, he aint no kid plus we need to see what he's got in his locker fairly soon so we know as a club what to do with him.

However good or bad he was however, he was signed for two mangers ago and navigating that as a football is completely out of your control.

It's been getting in a mess for 12-18 months. There's mitigating circumstances with costs but spend cheap spend 2-3 times anyway. And go off on a random transfer policy tangent and it's what can happen.

They signed Beesley a year ago for the deal (Rochdale potless) and Critchley basically rejected him. Pissed about making hard work of signing Owen Dale for what exactly. Chasing Brannagan that was never going to come off. Wright coming and going. Tharme we're acting like we've spotted million pound potential in a few years time, but we'll always be a club who need players now not later. Loads of examples you can point to where you think all the gear and no idea.

I'm hoping Chris Badlan coming in to be an actual football person in the boardroom and now this big change this month is a step in the right direction.

I said a while back we could be on for another Riga/Clark season where it's easy to lose track of who's actually been in the team as there's so much churn. But fingers crossed this situation can be rescued now. We need some clean sheets to give us a better chance of one goal being enough to win a game. That's where we're at and we need some centre halves for it.

He's shit, why aren't we signing the likes of a Bobby Moore or Beckenbaur. There must be someone as good as them, not getting a game at Bournemouth or Southampton !!

Just wanted to be first to say it.

Yes agree with all of that.

But to me this kind of signing is just a continuation of that kind of mess we’ve had for 12 months.

We will see, and as you say actually I’ve stated I have faith in the board and club in general so you’ve got to hope Badlan’s got this under control.

Just feel Tharme physically fits the bill for MM. When I saw him in pre season I was shocked at the pace he had. Think that could be valuable.

I can't believe that Mickey Mac will sanction, for want of a better word, an obvious poor 1st team signing. And you'd hope Badman is a big step up on previous.

It is. But at least with the change of head coach there's a clearer focus on a shorter time period of four months where everyone should know what's needed for the task in hand. We're getting linked with more experienced players here, not U21s on first loans out.

Tharme has had an injury as well and just made it back into the Accy team this past week. And I'm not sure (the same for Williams potentially going back) if there's a loan deadline for recalls this month and if we've gone past that yet.

Looks a big strong lad as well.

The points made above are completely valid though? Lack of recent appearances and an injury doesn’t excite fans and for good reason considering the events of this season.

Completely valid. In an ideal world any January signings would be luxury and made from a position of strength. But we're in trouble, limited in what we can do and who we can attract. It's always going to be a reactive window.

Be loads of names like this popping up and we'll probably end up with the one that feels the 'worst' as its just how it goes.

I have full faith in the guys we got from Coventry and they say he's right for us he's right for us unless MM objects.

Has experience of playing in a back three for Northampton, Brentford and Sheff Utd
8 League starts for Brentford. 1 for Sheff Utd. everything else L1/L2. Best season in L2 with Northampton.

112 League starts total aged 27.

If they can get a good deal for him that suits our pocket then he'll be in. Would'nt be surprised if MM wants 3/4 in,
have to cut there cloth accordingly. Praps why they're not going in for McNally ? Flint is reported to be on £13 thou
a week so its all in the melting pot.

Yep that's where we're likely at. All the fancy job titles, bells and whistles at management level nowadays but it's still the same Blackpool scratting around to try and make something out of damaged goodes.

If Flint is on £13 grand a week (highly unlikely) he'll be there until the end of his contract- His market value is probably less than half of that figure so Stoke will need to 'take a bath' to get him off the books.
