City, Liverpool, England - how Blackpool attack like the world's best sides

All - this went up on UTMP this morning. I hope it is sufficiently edited, structured and insightful for AVFTT's liking! It focuses on how Blackpool have the same attacking structure as many of the world's top sides (Southgate's England in particular).

A large part of why I write is because I want to learn more about the game of football, and then to share that with others. There are so many layers and ways to enjoy the game - from the "away-day experience" content that Lee Charles and Jane put out, to the irreverence of Mitch Cook's Left Foot.

The layer I know and enjoy best is the tactical/statistical layer, and my hope is that people will read this stuff, be able to connect what they're seeing on the pitch to the principles and ideas laid out - and find enjoyment in that extra bit of understanding.

No matter how you enjoy football - I hope everyone enjoys the Milwall game today! UTMP!

Great read thanks for that. Have to say though Southgates England was nowhere near as attacking as that most the time. Was more like a flat back 5 with two deep cdm in the final. Would be interested to see the average positions of the England team in the final

Always good to think about tactics and try to understand what's going on through a game. I'm thinking, here, that surely all teams seek to use the 5 strips at times during the game, when they are in the ascendancy, at least?

Therefore, all we need is someone to stick the ball in the net.
Or is it that simple?
Well I think Yates, Lavery and John-Jules are all natural finishers. We just need to create the chances for them, I think. We are getting attempts at goal, but how many have Yates and JJ had? Would be great to get Simms, but that could be January, could be never.

That’s a great analysis UTMP - really interesting.

Guardiola’s tactics have changed the game 👍

One statistic I always looked for and encouraged in adult and junior teams I worked with was the number of touches in the box and also the amount of tines the ball was in play and on the ground in the box ….

Keep up the good work

You’d be surprised. Here are the average positions. Clear front 5!

You’d think so, but with limited time to coach, some sides often de-prioritise practicing these movements. Set-piece and transition heavy sides like Cardiff will often practice those instead - meaning they struggle to do things like this well in settled possession!

After today, I think Blackpool could spend more time defending set pieces!
