City Status

Why isn't Blackpool one of the 39 locations bidding for City Status? Lack of ambition to level up?

A number of cities are doss. Preston- Stoke On Trent- Hull etc.Nothing much to be gained by applying to be a city.

Milton Keynes applying for the 4th time. There's a feature on the BBC website. There is no additional funding from the change in status. It's all about the cachet.

Northampton Town might have to change their name if successful.

The only interesting bit is that Overseas Crown dependencies can also apply. Port Stanley and Gibraltar in the running.

At least T'Rovers City has a cathedral already, however its population, like Nobberville, is smaller than the Gold Coast.

Every place big enough in the USA is a City, I think I heard that there is only one town in America, kind of dilutes the whole thought of a “City” - in any case it all lost its appeal when Preston got it, made a mockery of the whole thing.

Elgin is applying

Elgin is a small market town with a big RAF base, also called a dormitory

And Port Stanley, Falklands

Very strange list

Why should it, what is to be gained? Wolverhampton is now a City and all the huff and puff about how it would regenerate the town has been totally unfounded, we no longer even have a decent market, the stallholders have been driven away by high rents and rates, it used to be brilliant a few decades ago.

Blackburn and Warrington are going for it.
Blackpool only works if it’s the whole Fylde coast and some of the rural bits.
It'll never happen though, three different local councils and two authorities.

Waste of time anyway, it's not exactly turned Preston in to a bustling modern metropolis.

As a neutral, Preston is definitely on the up. There is a lot of investment going into the centre of Preston and with it being on the main line to Birmingham and London it does have a lot going for it. I'd say out of Manchester it's the place which is faring the best in the North West.

Southend are guaranteed it as a tribute to their murdered MP.
Perhaps if someone bumps off Benton we’ll get city status.
(Mod’s) This is very tongue in cheek & I don’t advocate this at all, despite my dislike of the bloke.

It’s weird but good to see how much investment is going on across the north west now Manchester has priced out developers. Preston and Burnley are having millions pumped into the town centres through the University and local councils.

Nah don’t want to be a city.
Cities are usually overpopulated, dirty, polluted, have too many high rise buildings, and the residents are caught up in the rat race where we are meant to be so committed to year on year financial growth by building more and more etc.

We should position ourselves as the adventure town of the north. Somewhere different to come for experiences, fun and to make memories.

Northampton is large. Reading calls itself a city regularly anyway. Middlesbrough has Simon Clarke (Minister) as MP and is in the Boris inner circle. It will be one in each of the home countries.

Maybe, but A lot of that is for students .. and if not, Prescum does not have an attractive enough evening economy to attract many people to live there , especially those of some wealth,… in my view .

I think we should be awarded City status, taking in Lytham St. Anne's as suburbs. Their people would be apoplectic with anger....make me laugh, anyway.

And I was born there. But you will recognise the type, eh?
They tend to not come from here, and they tend to live in Lytham. St Annes very different to Lytham now.
Lytham is full of a Lancashire version of Joey Essex types these days, people from East Lancashire and Greater Manchester that have made a few quid.
Most of St Annes is very much like FY4, and St Annes Square has a load of decent quirky little bars and restaurants now, whereas Lytham is full of over priced generic rip off places.
If you are looking for the old school Tory types there are still some in Lytham and Fairhaven lake areas but not so much in St Anne's.

Thanks. Worth knowing. Last time I lived in South Blackpool I used to cycle Sundays to the Taps - it was a long time ago. I guess that's the type I'm thinking of.

Save yourself a few miles the taps isn't good anymore, hasn't been for a while. In Lytham the little micro is good but that's it.
I'm St annes there is keg n cask, 15s, hop shoppe, 10s and the soon to come Pier Inn.
Better mix of people, better beer, better prices and six miles less pedalling on a round trip but I'd probably just jump on the train from Blackpool South!!
