Connolly

There was no structure at all , poor performance by so many of the players last night, it does make me wonder if Critch is losing the dressing room , but yet they were brilliant last Saturday! It’s a funny old game .

At present we have only got one player that gets you off you’re seat ,Dembele and he will not be at the club next season

Connolly was far from the worst player on that pitch last night.

Marv couldn't pass a ball if his life depended on it. Im not having the fact that he shouldn't be in a position to pass the ball out from the back, im a sh!te Sunday league player, and I can manage to pass a ball 10 yards, and if it isn't on, get rid of the thing. That's not tactical, that's just being cr*p and not thinking. He shouldn't need Keough holding his hand anymore, he should be smart enough to have taken on board what he has learnt, and be able to do the simple things right. Unfortunately so many times he cant.

Byers, who when signed was supposed to give our midfield some fight and drive. He has probably shown his ability for about 45 mins in total. First half last night people were raving about him, he was poor. Yes he could make an easy pass, but jesus, the amount of times he would run into players, when a simple pass was on, or would just lose the ball for no reason what so ever, was criminal for a player who has lots of championship experience.

Dembele, yes he is great, and boy does he know it, and he does get fans off their seats with his runs, but how many of those runs either ends up with him running into a defender, or throwing himself on the floor looking for a free kick, when 8/10 times there is a pass on, where he can make a quick one two, but chooses not too. Yes you can question other players, or the tactics, but he has done it from day one, and I find it super frustrating sometimes. I'm not saying he isn't a class player, because he clearly is, but sometimes, you have to notice the things he does that are not so good, because too often, he he gets us in great positions, and loses the ball.

As for CJ, he clearly has the pace to beat a man, but sh*ts himself every time he looks up (when he does look up) and sees a defender coming towards him, turns around and passes back. Use your pace, knock it past a defender, and see what happens, I don't think many fans would criticise if he attempted that more (which he did before signing this new contract)

Joseph, there was very little point him being on the pitch last night, was too far away from anyone (Get close to Beasley, for those flick ons, or make a run when Dembele has the ball) too many times last night he was waiting for stuff to happen, instead of making stuff happen. Generally he has done that well, but for some reason last night, he forgot he was our number 9.

Connolly last night was way down the list of reasons we lost that game. I can see why Critch has him in the squad, he can play in a number of positions (but please never ever wing back again), always wears his heart on his sleeve, and yes, he does have many limitations, but to point him out last night is a bit harsh IMO. Cleared one in the first half that was certainly goal bound, got beaten once or twice for pace, but that isnt the fact he is sh*te, its the fact, and the reality that some players are quicker then others. Its easy to have a scapegoat in the team, simply because he isn't some elaborate flair player, but I do think our fans like to jump down his throat after a defeat when a lot of the time, the finger can most definitely be pointed in many other areas.

A couple of things stick out for me.

One is that a player who is labelled 'utility' needs to get rid of that label by showing he's good enough to nail down one position. CC hasn't done that. Which says plenty.

The other is thata player who is very one footed was played on his weaker side, when we had an alternative option on the bench who would have played on his strong side, yet went unused all night.
All. Down. To. Critchley ...

In all honesty he can be a decent utility player at times, but is being asked to play in position and a system that doesn't suit.

What he's demonstrated recently has been quite frankly appalling, with those silly challenges after being caught out.

As serious as the matter is I still managed a chuckle at this on X 🤗

No team would be picking him after the performance against Peterborough, he’s the type of player who has won a cereal box competition to get football tryouts at Everton.
