Connor Ronan

I’d absolutely love to see him back here. Still plenty of room for development and I can’t honestly see Wolves giving him first team football. It’s a massive step up from St. Mirren to Premier League football. He needs Championship football really and could well be available for a permanent move going off of some interviews I’ve seen of his. Sure there will be plenty of suitors though.

This is what I don’t understand about our recruitment policy. We have known for the last couple of seasons we are in desperate need of a creative midfielder, we know what Ronan can do but he hasn’t even been linked with us.Critchley has been talking all season about our failings in front of goal, yet we , again, weren’t even linked with Ellis Simms who also went north, and we certainly know what he can do.🤷

The problem with Simms was that when he became available we'd already signed Beesley a week previous. Not sure why we didn't go in for Ronan on loan.

Neither am I, Simms was also injured during the close season so you could say that’s why we didn’t go back in for him. But and it’s a big but we signed Dale who was also injured and didn’t play for seven games.🤷

Just thought, perhaps it’s because Simms and Ronan didn’t play for Crewe.😁

Could be, but they seem to like their loans stepping up to a higher league.🤷
Yeah. He performed well in Div 1. SPL is a step up from that but not the Championship barring Celtic and Rangers.
They maybe felt Champ was a step too high for him at this step? Same for Simms. Bad injury and needed to get goals and confidence back. Therefore off to SPL where he is up against poor teams where he can cash in and play maybe 8 or 10 tough games where he can be measured properly.

Maybe Prem clubs like Wolves prefer players to sample several clubs for their development.
Look at what it did for KDH
Good point. Also, I think our mentality of development and long term planning has to come into it. Only four loans throughout this season, with two of them being with a view to buy. Probably the mentality of the board to avoid loans where possible, as you don't end up with a sellable asset at the end of their time here. Spend time, money and energy developing a player to get nothing back at the end.

Simms has been on the bench for the last few games for Hearts but maybe they are saving him for the Scottish Cup final? However, I think Simms future at Everton will be largely dependent on whether Everton stay up or not. If they are relelgated there is going to be a mass exodus of players particularly forwards like DCL, Richarlison, Rondon even Anthony Gordon. The signing of Beesley probably means we've moved on from Simms but there are other forwards like Lewis Dobbin and Nathan Broadhead (11 goals in 22 Lg1 appearances for Sunderland) who could be made available for loan for the Championship

Agree about Connor Ronan he had that similar creative spark as Hoolahan, meaning he could play in tight spaces and pick a killer pass. However, as stated previously he may well be in picture foe Wolves next season.

I don't fully agree with that on the risk-reward of the loan system. What you get in return for the loan fee and subsidising the players wages is that extra bit of quality without the gamble on a huge transfer fee + salary package.

You only have to look back on our loan history with players like Charlie Adam, Seamus Coleman, DJ Campbell, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Conor Ronan, Dan Ballard and Jordan Gabriel etc to see the benefit of the loan system.

But every transfer carries a risk so for all the positive examples above there are the negative ones like Woodburn and Tyreece John-Jules.

I see he has cleaned up all the awards at St Mirren in the SPL...A few clubs are sniffing after him for yet another loan..Could he be the creative midfielder we're looking for? Or is he too lightweight?? He reminded me of Wes Hoolahan when we had him a few seasons back
Damned good player. If you are good enough it doesn’t matter about your so called build. Some of the greatest footballers of all time have been on the ‘small’ side…

Completely agree, I'm a fan of loans for that reason. Just making the point that they're mainly beneficial for the short-term of the club, whereas there's an emphasis on long-term planning with us.

One of a number of good loans over the years like KDH and Ballard. For me, obviously Sterling aside, where we've failed this season. With a good squad, which we have, you always need those 3/4 loans just to bring in some quality and we didn't have that this season.
