Covid19 ethnic minority deaths

Saw something on BBC news this morning about ethnic communities saying the government aren’t pushing the message in their communities enough. Not being funny, but how?

Do they not get the same tv news we do? Are they not carrying out the social distancing rules?

Not trying to come across as racist but I don’t get how the numbers of infections and death in black & Asian communities are bigger than in white communities

They believe Don K and ignore anything the mainstream media say because they lie.

🤣🤣

Well yeah, the media is basically a Tory propaganda machine. But surely they watch the news and are aware there’s a global pandemic and, you know, should act accordingly? Maybe stay indoors a bit more? Only go out for the essentials?

Made this point a few days ago when it first came out. It also maybe a factor that we have a higher population of Asian and black people in our country and why our death rate is higher. Another factor perhaps to consider but the usual suspects will overlook that point.

According to figures released in Bradford, there is no difference in this area. Surprising when you see them in parties of ten and disregarding signs that kids playgrounds are shut, and that is from first hand experience not a racist comment.

If you don't watch the news on television or listen to the radio, nor ever log onto the internet or any type of social media. If you never pick up a phone call to a friend or family member and never look outside your window and wonder why it is quieter than usual and has been for 2 months, barring Thursday night at 20.00 when everyone stands outside banging kitchenware for some strange reason?
If food mysteriously appears at your home every day and you did not have to either order it or go and get it nor live in a care home.

If you live in a sealed bubble and all of the above is true, then you might not have heard of social distancing, new hygiene standards and the raging virus.
The message not getting through can only be down to stupidity or sheer arrogance towards the crisis.

Take some f*cking responsibility, the not getting into the "communities" bit is absolute horse shite

That’s what I thought but feared the default “racist” claims. Obey the rules and you’ll be fine

A few different reasons being put forward...Just read one relating to Vitamin D deficiency, which may me more prevalent in the Black Community due to them absorbing less Vitamin D from sun exposure in Italy, Britain etc..

Staying indoors is very likely to signifcantly contribute to the problem for everyone. Regardless of your ethnicity, exposure to sunlight and vitamin D is essential to maintaining a healthy immune system.

It's a difficult one this. if there is a genetic reason for this disparity, I haven't read an explanation of it as yet. There may be one.

I suspect it is more likely an amalgam of softer, socio-cultural and socio-economic factors, to be honest :

* BAME communities are more likely to live in poorer quality housing...

* .... because they are more likely to live in cities and do low-paid jobs...

* .... which in turn is in part a product of doing poorly at school (only in part, as poor performance in schools is by no means just about race)

* the low paid jobs they do tend to be disproportionately higher risk ones

All this means that they are a higher risk group in many ways before you start factoring in other things. I don't know the answer, or what people think the Government could have done differently. What differentiations in treatment there have been have been because of age or underlying health considerations ; can you imagine the outcry if the Government had at any stage suggested any form of racial segregation? So much of the posturing that you read in the media is just that - posturing.

If my theory is right, this pernicious impact has been years in the making, and no COVID policy on earth would have done much to mitigate it. How you address it in the future is a completely different issue.

44% of front line jobs in social care are held by BAME.

They have factored the 'Job thing' intio the analysis and there is still a racial prevelance, not sure whether or not they have taken account of other socio-economic factors.

You'd like to think that any sort of genetic research was already happening as you'd have to assume that it would provide better understanding of the virus overall. I do find it hard not to think that socio-economic reasons are a big part of it though.

Like so many of these things, it is multiple variables, and it takes a long time to tease out. Did you see the highest risk was Taxi drivers, followed by male chefs? Where peoplework, where they live, how they get to work, how many generations including sheltered live together, genetic predisposition to disease

Erm .... did they not explain the possible reasons on the news item that you saw 🙄

Athers, nor trying to come across as racist you said but how could “it” be different in your OP, that was your question .........for exactly the same reasons that most 100 metre finals are won by black men whereas all Olympic swimming medals are won by white men ....there are Natural differences between the races....read up on it
