Critch’s Love Child

We do have a Connolly problem. Sometimes he is noticeably bad, sometimes he isn't.

The problem is we let in a lot of goals when he is on the pitch.

I think he has started 6 league games. In those games we let in 11 goals. On top of that he came on as a sub in the Charlton game and let in 2 more goals.

I have discounted the reading game, but I think that was another sub on and a goal conceded, and Stevenage where he played just 3 mins.

Those are terrible goal ratios compared to when he isn't on the pitch

Agreed with o/p Connolly is definitely costing us goals with his inconsistent defending. However if Critch can drop Marv I'm sure he will drop Connolly anytime soon.

Connolly and Morgan passable in emergencies .Weir doesn't look great but the gold medal for utter tripe must go to Carey.!!
It doesn't matter whether he starts or comes on as a sub. He s BLOODY USELESS. Runs away from the ball, can't tackle ,only passes backwards ,constantly waving his arms about pointing (looking busy?) Gets a chance to shoot and 9times out of 10 misses. He wouldn't get in B/pool Mecs at present.
Please Mr C get someone else to polish your boots @@

True.
Pennington got out jumped in the air for the Cheltenham player to set up their second goal
Any blame for Grimshaw for any goals? The 1st was in the corner but was he too far over when he didn't need to be.

The 2nd one hits him and goes in, unlucky or a bit slow to react?

Summed up a poor display 2nd half and a terribly poor goal to concede.

I really want to like Connolly and Carey but they simply don't do well enough to warrant a starting place. Carey was totally invisible when he came on tonight.
When Norburn and Husband come back, hopefully Saturday, I don't think Connolly and Carey should even make the subs bench.

Connolly was one of our better performers last season but seems to have gone backwards. I would not be surprised if he starts against Posh on Saturday purely because he's Critches fave!

I thought Connolly did alright last night , but this now looks like a witch hunt to me . Just like CJ had to put up with for the last two years . It's sad that fans have to come out and have a go even after a win . In fact I don't believe they are fans . There moans don't help the team , they certainly don't help the player they have targeted and if they don't like the Blackpool win ,why don't they go and support the nobbers.

While once again, the game completely bypassed Carey. His five or six touches will get him great passing accuracy because they were all 5 yards backwards.
Harsh. Did nothing wrong. Had the best effort of the second half. Connolly and Weir both made clear errors, Connolly's led to at least one goal and Weir gave the ball away multiple times for no particular reason, but we'll point out that Carey, having clearly been sent on to play a different role than Dembele played badly because he kept the ball well?

I really like Carey but he looks like he leaves his confidence elsewhere atm and persisting with him isn't helping him.
Last season has damaged him and if Critchley persists with him he won't recover his form.

As for his love child, he is at fault in the build-up to a goal against more often than not these days.

He did fine last night though. He did nothing wrong. He looked after the ball, didn't bring on any pressure to us and had a decent effort that was deflected just over. I'm genuinely baffled by the idea his sub in particular created an issue. Dembele's influence had waned, we were already under pressure and Carey was a logical choice as he's able to play a bit deeper and offer more neat and tidy work as opposed to Dembele's higher risk work.

Overall I thought we looked a bit shakey last night defensively, not just Connelly. Casey and Pennington lost a lot of first ball/headers, Connelly distribution and one-on-one defending poor, and Grimshaw didn't do great for either of there goals. I think it just shows if Husband doesn't play we miss his balance (being left footed), his experience and organisation.

Carey is a complete waste of space. I have spent the last 2 seasons defending him and expecting him to come good. I have now given up any hope of him ever being a player of any note. As was posted above, he is playing at a level a couple of divisions above his ability.

So what did he do wrong last night?

"Waste of space" doesn't explain anything.

I saw him basically play a bit like Grant Ward last night and come as close as anyone to scoring. He was sent on to do what Dembele wasn't doing (track/press the deep midfielder) which he did, retain the ball (he did) and to offer a bit of threat when apt (shot from edge of box deflected just over)

Could you explain what he actually did wrong?

He is a shadow of his former self and he rarely passes the ball forward but I do think he is not suited to the formation and roles he has been asked to play.

As much as I love him the Tangerine tinted specs are now off here I am sad to say because there is a decent player in there and I really do think he needs time out 😢

I don’t personally think being compared to Grant Ward is much of a recommendation. With regard to tracking the deep midfielder, he doesn’t track anyone. He just trots about doing not much of anything, he very rarely tackles, has one speed but has a decent shot, which he rarely uses. No as I said he’s playing a couple of levels above his ability . Kings Lynn was about his level.

I disagree. He's a talented player who is in a slump of confidence.

He absolutely tracks. He's not great in the tackle no, but there's a difference between not tracking and pressing and not being strong in the tackle.

He's had the most shots (and shots on target) of anyone bar the strikers and hit woodwork and forced wonder saves this year. He's only started about half the games too. His passing is as accurate as anyone and no, he's not always ambitious with it but that's partly a symptom of confidence and partly I think by design.

I'm not so certain about anything as to say he's definitely going to be a wonderful footballer who will light up Europe (to counter your Kings Lynn viewpoint) but aside from Dembele he's probably the most technically able player we have and I will keep backing him till he's gone, whenever and however that is because as CJ shows, a player can play a lot of the game in their head and it makes a fuck load of difference.

CJ is older and uglier that Carey too and I'm fed up of seeing 'Carey is shit' trotted out as if that's going to inspire the lad to reach his potential.

Give it a few rough games and Dembele will be 'too lightweight, a luxury player, selfish' etc as fans always seem to turn on players with talent first.

Carey isn't at his best no, but he's not 'useless' as being part of several good team performances shows and I'd struggle to say when he's cost us a game or shown a lack of application (he's just shit at tackling) or shown greed or selfishness or whatever. If anything, I wish he'd be a bit less team orientated and follow the Critch mantra with slightly less devotion.
