The call to change the manager every time we lose is counter-productive. Some Clubs who have a gate average in the 20k region have found it very hard to get out of League 1 despite the extra income they generate. Our budget is the sixth or seventh biggest in this league and our league position is not massively under performing if we look at it honestly. The smaller teams that get promoted with the bigger clubs tend to get relegated quickly from the higher divisions and often end in a downward financial spiral chasing dreams.
We all want Blackpool to be successful but patience and a long term plan is required for that. I think our chairman knows this and is willing to back Critchley with patience to get us there. At the moment our squad is certainly lacking in some areas. Our defence does not always dominate in the air and is guilty of too many individual errors. Out wide we have a tendency to give the opposition the time and space to cross the ball.
In midfield we have not always shown the aggression to compete with other teams or creativity to play through them. Up front there is a genuine lack of pace and often a failure to hold the ball up to allow the midfield to support them. There is certainly a question mark over the touch and footballing intelligence of a few. We have relied too heavily on Dembele for the creative spark and the lack of protection he has received from the referees this season has been criminal.
On the plus side, we have a very strong home record and a fantastic support when we get behind the team. Our keeper is very good. We do have a number of players with the ability to be successful at this level and we have been outplayed on only a couple of times this season. We also have a committed chairman with a long term plan for the development of the club.
A couple of quicker players, a dominant centre half and a creative midfield player have to be the immediate goals for our recruitment team. However, we do have to realise that those qualities are not easy to find and will come with a high price and a lot of competition from other clubs.
Alternatively we can show patience and focus on our academy to produce the type of players we need in our first team to successfully compete in the Championship. This route takes time but a good example is the players now being produced through the Blackburn academy.
Personally I would give the present manager the time and support to achieve this but everyone is entitled to their own opinion, that is why football is so exciting and everyone can take part.
