Dan Sassi joins Rochdale

Seen a few comments on FB questioning this but it makes sense for people we have to develop either in the dev squad or a loan, depending on what is best for them at that stage.

People saying we haven't seen much benefit yet from the youth, I feel we are building and let's be fair, it took a while to get the pieces in place, get it all setup and moving. It's still not in it's final form anyway.

But we have Apter now showing good things only a level below us and the very nature of the youth setup means it will take time for the conveyor belt to be moving with the players we want on it at all various stages.

Given what we had before SS arrived, it's vastly better now and with covid slowing things down it would always take a few years to see anything coming out the other side.

I feel we are not far off now seeing some benefits, although you'll always get some who don't make it, promising youngsters don't always fulfil their potential, but some do.

Obviously there's various levels, where you can get quite young ones or ones like Sassi who are far closer to the end of the development process.

Maybe @Insider can add some thoughts on our setup, how things are progressing and how far off we might be from having a few more break out ready for league football?

We're adding more all the time aren't we? Who was that big lad recently?

I have mentioned this a few times and touched on the subject only yesterday on the Dobbie thread, including a mention of Dan Sassi who, along with Finnigan, played for the Dev Squad this week. (Finnigan scored)
I think whilst the Academy remains at Cat 3 we are precluded from entering the better quality Development team competitions. So currently sending our more promising young players out to play "mens" football is probably for the best. Perhaps that could even be backed up by how relatively poorly the PL U21 teams fared in the BSM Trophy.
There's lots of good work going on in the background in our Academy and I understand 9 players from our u16 squad have been offered scholarships (last season it was 3).
As for the "big lad" I think you might be referring to Takudzwa Gwanzura who did look very big in the photo on twitter (it might have been slightly deceptive). He was signed from Everton on a scholarship so will be part of next seasons u18 squad.

I do hope we haven't been deceived by perspective and signed a 4 foot 6 'big lad'...

I am positive regarding younger players coming to the club, Finnigan and Sassi are promising players who Sadler has paid transfer fee money for. I believe they will both make there debut for the club this season. Apter, Moore and one or two others will be close to making there debuts, this is what we all want surely, being a supporter is not short term but long term. We should all stay true and back the club.

Looked good by all accounts want to give him some league action and maybe return to play a part

Very very few players make it into Prem or Championship teams as a regular starter unless they’ve had a loan experience at divisions below. It is few and far between.

I really support us getting the youth out on loan in Div2 or Conf and having as much game time as possible. It’s also better for scouting to see them in real life, competitive action. I’d be more confident in Apter now, than I was in the summer.

Just think of the majority of top British players - so many have played a season in lower leagues (even the Championship) as opposed to those who didn’t.

Blackpool defender Dan Sassi has extended his stay at Rochdale until the end of the season, having initially joined the non-league outfit on loan, the club have officially confirmed.

The young central defender moved to Bloomfield Road during the winter transfer window from Burnley for an undisclosed fee, having failed to make a first-team appearance for last season’s Championship champions, although he was an unused sub for the Clarets last season in a 1-0 win over Fleetwood Town in the FA Cup.

Had a clean sheet in his first full 90 minutes the other day.

Few comments on the Rochdale forum .. doesn't sound the best!!

Sounds like Rochdale fans also like to simplify footballers into definitive "great" and "rubbish" boxes, without any context like ages or position being played, just like many of our fans do!

It can take players time to settle and find their rhythm.

He's also there to develop and has only had a short while yet.

Owen Moffatt is also at Dunfermline. He came on in the 2nd half of tonights game.
On iplayer, there is usually a Scottish Championship game on a Friday night. I watched Dunfermline v Dundee Utd last week, cracking game! Dunfermline were like 70s Ajax on the break and beat the leaders 3-1.

There must have been a mix up. What the hell are we doing sending our players to a team that plays that style of football.
No wonder Brad didnt come on.
