David Downes First Interview

A great new signing and an interview with the new sporting director after people moaning about the lack of signings and communication from the club despite it only being June.

In the words of Chris Eubank 'the breeze is ... stupendous'

A good opening interview from David. Another person on Board that talks the talk about recruiting through the Academy and has spoken at length to Ciaran Donnelly. Let's see if he walks the walk.
He first job is to persuade Critch that his job isn't all about developing kids from other Academies at least until he's given our own a chance.
And yes I've remembered we are a Category 3 Academy.

Seems a really good guy but he stresses that his experience and focus lies around academy football. So not sure how much he will be involved in identifying first team players?

Really good interview. Few points of what I can remember for those who are too mean to pay £1.99 😅

Most interesting point for me was about recruitment: the players we sign probably won’t be exactly what we need. They may need improvement from a sports science point of view or through coaching, and it’s part of his job to ensure that different people, ie coaches, sports science, analysis are working together to achieve this

Other points…

• born in Blackpool, ‘thinks’ he saw his first game at Bloomfield Road (moved aged four)
• got his first break in football at Wigan working with Uwe Rosler
• headed Academy recruitment at Aston Villa, moved up through the ranks and was entrusted by Steve Bruce with first-team recruitment, which took him to Wednesday
• has experience across the gamut of off-field responsibilities, including sports science, analysis, coaching, recruitment
• stressed the need to link the development pathway to the first team so, for example, if they’re looking for a left-back on loan there’s a responsibility to ensure that they look at players already in the system before going external
• won over by Simon Sadler’s enthusiasm, they talk every day
• can talk about football for hours with Critch. Also spending a lot of time talking to Ciaran Donnelly

This one was free, so you wasted your time posting and your sarcasm.

Sounds good.

Let's see if he's got the goods.

Couple of decent signings so far.

Hope it continues.

And let's see some of our youngsters break the first team before everyone's injured and we're pretty much relegated 😃

Also, I believe he is Bobby Downes son. He was a good reliable winger for us.

Oi. I've paid £1.99. Don't give it all away😉

Just hope we don't take the eye off the ball of our main ambition this season of promotion.
Developing players and academies are great but, for me, Championship football is a far greater reward.

Yeah good to hear from him and get a feel of what he's about. 👍
Unfortunately it seems Welsh Phil wasn’t particularly ‘enthused’ by the interview and would have preferred if David had done a Pole Dance, whilst spinning plates on his head and simultaneously confirming an £80M spending budget, the guarantee of Premier League football in two years, free Season Tickets for anyone under 5ft 6 and the promise of Paul Ince as our next manager 👍

I believe he pretty much did say and do most of that, probably in the deleted scenes. I went to have a look but there was nothing in there...
