DAVID OATES

Mentioned on Five Live last night that yesterday was 8 years since the passing of David.
RIP Oatesy - very sadly missed.

Heard the same 'tribute' to him last night, with his 5Live colleagues giving their best to his family etc.

Met him a couple of times during the first Grayson era and he was a likable guy with good humour. Also remember him and Sir Jim getting to commentate on the home win v Newcastle in Ollie's first season. It's the one time, I'll acknowledge the BBC being biased... 😉

I only met him the once, through a mutual mate, when he had done his journalism course down in Falmouth. Very nice bloke and no age to leave his family behind. I loved his commentary on the DVD of Blackpool's win at Preston the year of Wes's Panenka penalty..

At the PNE Wes pen game he insisted on 5live giving him the game . When Wes scored the pen he was on his feet with an arm punching the air in delight yet he was describing the pen to 5 live in a correct balanced format for the listeners . Fact . I saw him as was in corporate that day .

Thanks all for kind remarks.
Do you know roughly what time the piece was on radio on Wed night, so I can play back for on iPlayer/sounds ?

I bumped into him on Preston station just a few weeks before he passed away. He was his usual self, always good to talk to. We lost a real good 'un there.
Cracking lad, knew him very well through a mutual. Every time we walked in a pub in London and saw him we used to sing to our most famous fan..... he used to pretend he was embarrassed but I’m sure he enjoyed it really 😀😀😀

Pretty sure it was during the first half of the Liverpool v Brighton game. Sorry I cant be any more precise than that.
