Deaf Institute & Gorilla closed down

Only a week after the government announced funding for the arts two of Manchester's finest venues have announced their closure.

These are exactly the types of venues where the money should have been directed but as always the London venues are obviously the priority. It stinks.

So what proportion of the money has been allocated to London? I haven't seen any allocations anoounced by the Culture Department and the Treasury .
I thought it was going to be spread around the country.

Heard this earlier and am so disappointed that we're losing two fantastic venues. Been to both many times and had some wonderful nights. Was due to see a band at Gorilla in March that was rescheduled to September. I expected it to be postponed again. I fear that there will be many more closures of iconic music venues to come.

Not sure mate but when it was announced they mentioned they would protect what they called their crown jewels . . . which I presume means venues like the RAH, Opera House & the west end theatres. Due to their audience you would imagine these are the types of venues that wouldn't really need the money whereas loads of small independent venues across the country are really struggling & should be priority IMO.

☹ Real shame
They were 2 good venues & the group have been a real success story.
Do they not also have the Albert Halls?

Sadly I can see a lot of smaller independent venues going to the wall.

As we've said, two really good venues for up and coming and some mid range bands. I fear for the Bootleg and the Waterloo in Blackpool. They cater, in general to a different crowd but are equally important to the live music scene in the town.

Been to both those venues in the last couple of years.. Neighbourhood festival every year has used them.
Suprised they have gone so early..

And I am suprised the amount of money the Waterloo have been spending whilst shut. Loads of work going on in there. They must be hopefull of holding on until we can go back in..

They are definitely doing a lot of work at the Waterloo but I believe a lot has been donated/ given and the labour has generally not cost anything. I think Ian has created a lot of goodwill amongst the music clique of Blackpool.

They do mate . . . I heard one report saying they had to close these two to keep the Albert Hall going.

Ah i suppose it makes sense as they spent a lot of money on the AH and it is a bigger venue. Shame they couldnt keep the others, hopefully at least one may bounce back in time under a new owner?
Not sure when indoor gigs will be back. Its bad enough for us punters let alone the thousands of touring musicians and crew who rely on them to make a living.

It's certainly looking like next year now . . . maybe March / April ?

I think it's up to us to fund the regional venues by going to them. Go to the Blackpool Grand to see a murder mystery instead of going to the pub or something else. That's what we all need to do.
