Dembele

What does he have to do to get a run of games?
Looks quality every time I see him, every time he comes off the bench he changes the game
When he came off against derby the other week the team looked much poorer without him.

Came on today and set up 2/3 really good chances.

Maybe Critchley is watching a different game but I don't see how he can be limited to 10/15 minutes off the bench occasionally.

Guys there was no way at all we could have started him today. We were lining up without Norburn and with an untested OB. Two wingers and two strikers.

Added to that it was against a team that plays through the defence and midfield and Dembele doesn’t defend. They would have totally over ran our midfield.

At home, and with Norburn back in alongside King Kenny, then potentially it’s worth the gamble and let him loose in Carey’s place. Knowing we will look better going forward, but be more vulnerable in defence.

Plus we effectively started the Stevenage XI barring the enforced change.

Did Critch write the above

Ollie says just attack, get the cigars and Brandy out and all will be fine

What does Carey bring to the team that Dembele can't match or do better?
Dembele obviously brings more in an attacking sense, I don't think there's any discussion about that.
Defensively I don't think there is much in it, Carey isn't significantly better in that regard.

Good analysis that.

Dembele was largely the reason for the Blackpool onslaught towards the end of the game. He was so fired up when he came on. Just a pity he was only given 15 minutes= hindsight's great isn't it?

Although agreeing with the impact sub thing in away games, the Bromley game would be an ideal game to start him to see how he goes.
Doing the stuff he was doing yesterday to Oxford to National League defenders would be worth seeing!

Slightly begrudgingly agree with that today & only because of Norburn's surprise absence.
However, I have noticed Dembele does track back & tries to get goal side when he loses possession, might not really put a foot in but that's the job of two DM's behind him.
Think it could be a really memorable season if he gets more starts.

I’d love it to work with him in that 10 role from the start. Just like Bowler did (and Poveda at the end) it gives the crowd a lift when he comes on and floats about, committing defenders and his little slide rule passes.

Critch will be itching to let him loose. He’s that X factor. It didn’t really work as the second striker with Rhodes as I still think both players need a target man up there. Therefore it’s got to be in that AM/10 role?

Alternatively, he could have run the Oxford defence ragged, as he did in the last 15 minutes If we are going to use him as a sub at least give him enough time to make a real impact. Plus, it's really good watching players with as much skill as he has.

Pretty much every loan we have had under Critch is with an eye on a potential purchase
I mean, like written into the loan. A proper option to buy.
We‘ve had loans before that have almost done too well and as such, priced ourselves out of the market.
Might explain why he hasn’t been getting more starts.

the difference he made when he came on was palpable - everyone in the ground, and especially the players, felt it.

their defenders didn't know whether to stick or twist, and it's that general sense of unease that affects their personal and collective concentration. as mentioned above, it creates pockets of space for others which is just as important, if not more so, than a moment of individual magic, even though he is well capable of that too.

i can easily see critch swapping him for carey at home. scary thing is (for the opposition at least), we've not seen the best of him yet either - he's only going to improve i feel.

Play him with two centre forwards ahead of him and two ball winning midfielders behind him and we’ll get the best out of Dembele.
3 2 3 2 formation, its the future.

Critchley is Mr Cautious where our fans are wanting everything now and the combination doesn't really work!
Why Ollie was appreciated is he was quite reckless but got results and the fans backing because of that.

I'm hoping we can buy but can't help think he's going to get priced out of our budget. You'd think, after his last few performances, if we are going to use him as an impact sub then it would be more effective to give him 30/35 mins as a minimum

He has the ability to play a defence splitting pass. He invariably looks to go forward.

Play him in the hole behind the strikers he will cause havoc.
Said this from the moment I seen him. He needs to play in the number 10 as a free role, picking the pieces off Kouassi & Rhodes. He looks a real player, can pick a cute pass for fun.
