Do Politicians think about what they say?

John McDonald on breakfast tv... wants the government to pay 90% of people’s earnings if they are prevented from or unable to work... their employers the other 10% ...also have a 3 month mortgage or rent break. Now everyone just think for a minute... anybody got it? MORE money in people’s pockets BUT nowhere to spend it!!!! For crying out loud surely in a time of national crisis we all need just enough to cover basic needs and cover overheads!!!!

Yes let's all pay those Premier league footballers on over 100grand a week 90% or the very wealthy that's some real socialist policy, no if those at the bottom of the ladder have to live of 200 quid or whatever it is should be the same for all.
Mcdonald proves again what a total fuckin idiot he is.

Didn't he get suspended from the treasury office at the GLC under Red Ken for falsifying accounts? Still its not all bad, his face was a picture on election night when the first exit polls came out. Pure TV Gold!

That's a standard sick pay policy for a lot of EU countries. Safe to say he wasn't talking about footballers lol - I don't agree with 99% of what Mr McDonnell says but it's very easy to disagree with him without inventing a load of crap.

90% would not be "more" money in people's pockets, 90% is, by definition, 10% less. There's plenty of people who don't have spare money after they pay rent, bills and basic food for the month, and so in that sense giving them even 100% of what they normally earn is "just enough to cover basic needs".

There's a lot of accusations of points-scoring at the moment, against both sides of the political spectrum, and this is certainly one case. It is unnecessary, both sides are doing their best right now. No need to bash McDonnell or Corbyn, they're dead weight already, they lost the argument, let them wither away in peace.

Anyone unable to work either employed or self employed should be given 300 quid a week until this is over

I don't know why the pair of them are still here should have been well gone after there embarrassing election defeat and put someone as a stand in till the new leader comes along.

To means test anything like this is incredibly expensive and time consuming, The government are under pressure to do something quickly yet people want to stall payments by means testing.
How about we appeal to peoples integrity? if you don't need the money either find a way to give it back when the crisis is over or donate it to charity. I certainly would do.

Exactly what they do in Scandinavia and their economy seems fine but carry on.

And it's McDonnell

Not just McDONNELL then! 90% + 10%. =100%. AND mortgage or rent frozen which would normally come out of the 100% therefore more disposable income when there are considerably less outlets to spend on.

So now it's a Tory chancellor paying up to 80% is it fiscally prudent and not from a magic money tree? 🤣🤣🤣

Are going to pay 50% + tax on your meagre earnings and 30% on your pension contributions Wazzock? That's what you'll need for a Scandinavian style income and benefits system. Over to you matey?

Makes the op and others on this thread look pretty stupid really.

And before I get pelters for “scoring political points at a time of national crisis” - that’s precisely what the op was trying to do (before failing miserably).

Wrong Mex but believe what you want.

90% or 80%?

Nowhere to spend it. Well apart from on food and boring stuff like that.

Which represents 10% of an average family income , My point is recreational spending will cease... so why pay People 100% of their current income, which JM was saying they should get. The Government needs every penny to fight this disease/ rectify their initial slow response . These are strange times we will all have to share the load.

They are simply de-valuing the pound to pay for all of this.

To us it’s real money - to the exchequer it’s just a number moving from one spreadsheet column to another.

The FTSE will bounce as UK assets become cheaper to foreigners.
