Do we need to change system

I Remember Holloway saying after Leicester potted him that he alway liked 433

He came to us convinced that was the way, them he made slight changes to get more attacking players involved and we ended up playing a 4231 most of the time with Charlie in a more forward role playing like a ten

I can't help but think thats the way this team will go with 2 of Robson, Virtue, Williams and the new lad as the 2

With a ten behind a striker and the two inverted inside forwards

Just think it would give us more balance and a bit more solid down the middle

One thing we do have is a load of is what i would call luxury players

We have several who could play at the ten or as a wide inside forward

Not a massive change but food for thought maybe...

Holloways tactics were with some really good players but I catch your drift. Not really sure how its shaping in L1 but after seeing a few Seasiders games this season, I'd say a solid defence is everything and the basis of any success.
Invariably in the modern game this involves playing a holding midfielder so not sure an attacking formation works without quality players.
Bielsa has been an eye opener tactically since he arrived-I've never seen anything like him- but he employs one man up top and a no:10 just tucked in. The wing backs run for 110 minutes and the focus is on fitness but its widely praised by the coaches who've gone on to succeed elsewhere.

I imagine that once the players become more comfortable with each other, there may be a tweaking of the system depending on the opponent.
433 and 4231 aren't much different and there will be times during games where we do both.

I'm more confident of it all clicking in to place now that we've signed these 2 players who should really be able to contribute.

It’s really too early to tell. Now the squad is complete we need to see if some of the new lads will balance the side and be able to execute NC’s vision.

One of the things that is puzzling is the departure of a few squad players to only be replaced by what appear to be similar squad players. Are Lubala, Kemp and Williams really an improvement on Garrity, Shaw or Feeney? My point being the later three would have probably enabled us to change formation somewhat. Where as the former three either lock us into isolated wide men or in Williams case will be considerably down the midfield pecking order.

I'm struggling with where Woodburn fits in, where does he normally play, or prefer to play?

I think a few tweaks might be necessary, I can unfortunately see a few more defeats before things improve. Mainly because the defensive side of the team is still unsettled and getting to know each other. Robson and Dougall seems a good pairing on paper if Barnsley fans are to be believed. May give Robson more licence to get forward because I think he's wasted in the defensive role.

I think the most important thing now is that this team is afforded time to gel and all get on the same wavelength.

We have the makings of a really strong team now, with 3 full internationals to boot.
Weaknesses were identified, the same ones most of us on here could see, and reinforcements were signed which appear to tick all the boxes.

Let's see what Critch can do with them now, I think we have a period of a few Tues/Sat games coming up, we could be in a decent position come the end of it.

Patience is needed.

I think I agree with you here Phil. It's a simple change from what we have been doing, switching to two more defensive midfielders and one attacking midfielder. Lose Ward, gain Dougall.

I have generally always believed that you should try to get your best players on to the pitch, within reason, and without distorting things too much! My problem with what we have now is that Madine and Yates don't fill me with confidence, we look like we are struggling when they play. It's not ideal but I just wonder if Woodburn playing behind Sarkic (fitness permitting) might be an option. Forget trying to be orthodox and just get our most effective attacking players to interchange etc.

It's Friday night, I've had beer, it seems to make sense. I'm thinking CJ and Anderson front wide. They both seem to know where the net is more than the alternatives.

I think Sarkic or maybe Woodburn in a false 9 role is what Critch sees for this team.
It doesnt appear that Yates is capable of playing it, and Madine certainly can't.
The fact that he is using wingers who both cut inside instead of getting to the by line and crossing it tells me he isnt looking for a traditional striker.

At least now Anderson should now be able to get forward much more with the arrival of McDougall.

Course we need to change...
Will he change ?
No !
Why not ?
Because he is Liverpool....
and Liverpool only do 433...
Therefore Blackpool do 433 and nothing else

I think I'm advocating two false 9s. Ha ha. Sarkic and Woodburn, swapping places. It's the future of the game. Possibly.

What a load of tosh...
We are playing 433......
Sarkic wont make the chuffing bench....
Who knows where he will play Woodburn until he gets on the pitch....

Not sure about the system but I’m sure we need to be more incisive - and by that I don’t mean going long - I mean stop faffing on the half way line and get the ball into dangerous areas, much quicker, using our abundance of pace.

It could well work, as both seem capable of playing both roles.
The key will be them linking up with whoever is on the left & Hamilton.
I'm more than happy with the fact we now have McDougall to play alongside Robson to provide what has been lacking since the first game of the season. It will literally be like having an extra man in midfield if he (surely) replaces Ward.

I predict the same formation and team sheet as last week, but probably Turton moving back into right back and perhaps Gretarrson coming in for Gabriel. Wouldn’t surprise me to see Ward dropped with Williams coming in, pushing Robson up the pitch a bit.

There must be a big reaction tomorrow and I do expect a much improved performance.

It's comforting to know
That your thinking
Is so far removed

It's Dougall.

No MC.

You could split the squad into two and be hard pressed to pick which is the better side. This season is going to be attritional and having two players for every position will bear fruit in the long run. My pick for tomorrow would be....
Maxwell, Gabriel, Ekpiteta, Ballard, Garbutt, Ward, Robson, Woodburn, CJ, Yates, Madine

Somerhing other than the personnel has to change to trouble the playoffs. Good post.

I think Coach Phil's views are solid and I honestly believe Critch wanted players that could play in a number of positions. Is it better to have "Jack of all trades" rather than a few experts? Yes with a small squad but probably no with the size of the squad he's assembled. So for the foreseeable I'd be happy with a settled team in a settled system whatever that is.
Familiarity breeds success more often that not but don't be blinkered if it doesn't.
