Dom Thompson

We need his energy, pace, enthusiasm and athleticism. We are woefully short in these key areas.

Does he make mistakes, yes, but it’s L1 and even the best players in our squad make plenty. Evans for example gives away so much possession with poor passing. He’s still a good player though.

Dom has never recovered with fans, after a dodgy period soon after he arrived. He doesn’t deserve the flack he gets.

Some people put him in the same bracket as Fletcher which isn't fair to Thompson.
I don't know what is wrong with Fletcher all we can do is go off what we see on the pitch but with Thompson what i see is a lad who doesn't lack commitment and he looks like he cares.
The lack of concentration and decision making are a problem but i genuinely think he gives it everything physically and beats himself up when it goes wrong.

Dom Thompson makes a few mistakes which is why I'd play Dom Hutchinson instead. What a great game he had last night when he came on. Just the type of class player we have been needing. I think he can turn our season around
Pity we can't play Tom Hutchison on the left wing.

I thought both substitutions were warranted last night. Fletcher can hold up the ball and did well to find space in front of their defence. It allowed us to soak up a bit of time.

But totally agree with the post. Thompson has energy and pace. He can also find his man with a cross when things are going well. He did well last night. He gave the opposition something to think about. He and CJ can dash back into defensive positions which means the opposition has to think again and their attacks break down. The game is fundamentally one of confidence and you can see it ebb and flow in both teams last night.

I think a neutral observer would say that was a pretty easy win for Pool last night. So high praise to all involved.

I really enjoy reading positive posts so thanks to the original poster

He definitely has beaten himself up about mistakes, which is a positive sign. I’ve never seen him give less than 100%, so he has my support. He’s still a relatively young lad that came from a very good academy. With Coulson out it’s an opportunity for him to play, without the outright defensive responsibilities. He’ll benefit from having Hubby behind him.

He gave us an injection of energy last night and you can’t fault his effort.

It will take a lot more to convince me he has a future with us.

Agree about his energy - just needs to work on defending a bit and hopefully he'll be used more. The negative I saw from the performance was how poor we were in front of goal. So many good situations wasted

If Gabriel isn't fit for next Wednesday we are probably going to have a back 4 of
Offiah Pennington Hubby Thompson.
Ashworth is the only other option and he could play LCB or LB.
Need to see how many more injuries we pick up on Sunday though.

That's a decent shout but I must say I was a bit alarmed last night at the way their winger (Forde ?) beat Husband so easily all the game. I think that's one of the reasons Thompson was brought on.

Your first para nailed it. I watched my first premier league game in years this week and what you immediately notice is energy, pace and athleticism, all things you highlight

Depends which bracket - if it's the work shy, ball dodging, apathetic category then that is unfair - if it's the 'incapable, hopeless and will never be a footballer' category then I'm on board!

Yeah but then players can actually pass the ball to each other. Any of us fans could run around with energy doesn’t mean we’re good enough though.

'... He and CJ can dash back into defensive positions...' The problem with that particular footballing gem being the suggestion that CJ might have to make a tackle.'

Sorry, folks - it just ain't happening...

I get the feeling Thompson desperately wants us to love him. That’s why he tries so hard and gives the energy a lot of us appreciate. Maybe he tries too hard, leading to bookings, bad and basic mistakes and us thinking he’s a liability. My hope is that our manager can use his experience to bring the lad on. Even so, I personally don’t think he’s got what it takes to match the levels of some of our other full backs, namely Lyons and Gabriel. My other hope is that a bit of Offiahs composure rubs off on Thompson, but we may need a composed and commanding keeper for that to happen.

And yet it has in every game he’s played over the past year, tracking back and covering, and making important interceptions / tackles. You don’t like him, fine, but don’t change history.

He is not good enough to be given a new contract, however we should utilise him when required, especially given the injuries, suspensions.
He puts in the effort but sadly that is not enough for him to have a future here, but I wish him well

I'd say he's more of an athlete than a footballer, Forest Green fans didn't know what to make of him and they ended up dropping out the league last season. We've got two of the quickest full backs in the division in Thompson and Gabriel, trouble is neither can defend and when they get forward their final ball usually let's them down. Whether an experienced defensive coach could help is another matter. If Keogh and Bruce can't help I'd be tempted to cut our losses on both.

I hope Gabriel is not fit after his defending at Bolton .

A very good example of exaggerated hate and exaggerated praise. Gabriel gets a pass for poor form and mistakes, and his Mrs blabbing that he clearly wanted a move - because he’s a cult hero and personallly delivers clothes on the one hand; Thompson pilloried on the other…

Weird on both sides of that equation.

Never forgave him for passing straight to Pukki who couldn’t believe his luck.
Thank you very much 1-0 to Norwich and that’s how it stood.

He was MOTM for Brentford v Man City and Appleton had a very high opinion of him.
