Don’t feed the birds in your garden - especially in the Fylde

Cretin neighbours and cretin council members.

Total waste of money, effort and time. As if some old lady putting seed etc out in her backyard is going to have any impact on the environment?

It’s no wonder the cry goes out for small government when you read articles like this (albeit is the Daily Mail)

Did you see that fella a few years ago in Morecambe who got done for feeding pigeons? He used to turn up with sacks and sacks of bird feed. Totally over the top behaviour that maybe had turned into an illness. It depends how far this person has gone with it.

He got a prison sentence for it. He died last year. Link about him here -

I've tried many times to feed the small birds in my garden but always the seagulls, pigeons and magpies take over. That said, I'd be annoyed if neighbours dobbed me in to the council.

Visitors to the town feeding the seagulls chips on the promenade doesn’t help either. Although difficult when you are sat there and get attacked 🙈
my daughter and i came over for the Derby game and got there early so i suggested a bag of chips on the front, shittest idea i've ever had!

Isnt there a massive decline in small birds in the UK particularly sparrows and Robins which is having a general detrimental effect on control of insect pests.

Understand they dont want massive numbers of gulls and pigeons, but its a coastal town for fucks sake gulls are a feature. I despair when i read things like this, complete and utter over-reach by petty government officials. Also if gulls are congregating in large numbers its not for seeds on a bird table its probably because there is lots of trash and other food waste in the area, which of course the local council doesn't deal with.

I know someone who feeds pigeons. He's amazed how many pigeons there are around his back garden now.

Happened to me a few years ago with a threatening letter from The Council about feeding pigeons when all birds ate off the table so it ended up in the skip.

Now only the squirrel's get fed with their feeder box.

Get the right type of feeder that does not allow anything bigger than blackbirds to perch. They are a little bit more expensive but do not want to feed up the wood pigeons, though they do look good enough to eat

The epitome of the council bullying a soft target.
No doubt the lady got pleasure in watching the birds feeding and now all that is gone.
I have a bird table in the back and at the front and a water feature that they bathe in and no-one complains;
get Packham and Strachan on the case.

Pretty much every UK songbird bird species is in decline, as are Herring Gulls and Starlings. The latest UK State of Nature report indicates that 19 percent of UK fauna and flora species are in danger of extinction in this country. We're doing a great job - 🙄 - all this despite the fact that the RSPB has more members than all the political parties in the UK put together.

Perhaps the gulls that seem to scavenge inland more these days is somewhat due to habitat changes & as posted above all the shit thrown on the floor by morons. That said this story seems ridiculous, but if my neighbour tried to report me to the council for feeding birds I'd be tempted to launch a few loaves of bread covered in sticky syrup onto their bungalow roof (you wouldn't want it to blow off) then they could listen to the pitter pattering along with their music.

Could end up a bit like this x20

I wish we had more birds, there are too many damned cats in the neighbourhood over 25 at the last count. We used to see Thrush and Blackbirds plus a few smaller birds, but now we see an occasional wood pigeon and that was chased the other day by a ginger feline.

An elderly neighbour used to feed the bloody seagulls every day. She annoyed all her neighbours, and I think she got a warning letter from the Council. We got her a few bird feeders which we put in the hedge for her.

The little birds could get in the hedge, but the seagulls and pigeons couldn't.

We do the same in our garden, and the dogs keep the seagulls away.

Where I used to live we had Red Kites which one woman used to feed with huge amounts of chicken pieces at the same time every day. They used to arrive en masse, between 25 and 40 of them, and it was a fantastic sight as they would swoop down, collect the chicken in their talons and eat on the wing. They would also feed partners at breeding time and then train the youngsters.
