Dougall, first game but impressive

Made a difference. Better team with Kaikai also, can cross, score and play through balls too.

Yates took his chance well and a good pen.

Other decent performances too, still much to improve, better passing needed second half.

But for Dougalls first game you can see the quality.

👍
As I said earlier at last one of our new players hits the ground running. 👍👍👍

I wanna know who found him, because Mansford, Johnson & Critchley apparently can't spot a player if their lives depend on it.

Well, if they get the blame for any bad one only fair they get the praise for good ones.

We have good players largely, just have had a bad start and they haven't gelled or are utilising the systems well enough. Plus some really bad errors and then we were under pressure to win some games.

But quality shows usually straight away, despite not playing with us before, under pressure away against Burton who played well second half especially.

He largely showed composure, put tackles in, set us going etc but with more intelligent passing than we've seen.

Hopefully can only improve and be consistent.

By far the best team performance of the season, good substitutions when they started to catch us out

Unrecognisably better than any league or cup game this season. Excellent.

For battling qualities and some attacking moments its was pretty good all round with some areas to improve.

I think there have been better dominating performances at times, whwre we havent always got the result or made silly mistakes.

Today only really Turton getting beat and an unfortunate own goal was the moment but wasn't a silly mistake as such. Just not the best defending.

Unlucky for the new Icelandic lad, looked fairly solid, at least we won so its hopefully forgotten.

Williams does the ugly stuff o can’t understand why some people can’t see it. Not referring to yourself BTW.
He does but so did Dougall AND looked superior going forward. But yes Williams albeit not setting the world on fire has added solidity.

Good post. We are frantic and completely lacking composure when in possession. The ball is like a hot potato at times.

I don’t want to put a damper on a great performance and result but I am not convinced about Hamilton. All her has is pace, I know that is a great asset, but what does he do with it. He goes down the wing like an express train then goes up a blind alley, he either loses the ball or has it taken away from him. Sorry not impressed.

There's a fine balance between playing at pace and being headless chickens. We had spells when the interchange at pace ripped them apart such as when Madine was played in, but sometimes a ball with a little more care would have created better chances.

His starting position for tackles and interceptions is excellent. Could be the midfield General we were looking for. And he can pass! (Forward). Also impressed with Greta. Don't blame him for that og. Turton should have cut out the cross and maxi was rooted to his line as per. Ekpiteta keeps getting better but needs to work on his distribution, not much won against him n the air though. Very pleased for Yates. Confidence goes a long way for strikers and the lack of a goal must have weighed on him. Madine missed a sitter but put a shift in and was a problem for them all afternoon.

Just to say we have Dougall, Ballard, Hamilton, Woodburn, Anderson, Kemp, Garbutt, Robson, maybe more need to see more of them but you can't say we have recruited all bad players.

Ekpiteta I have criticising him but was solid today, Gretarsson solid, unlucky in a way with goal.

So there's some good players there and may have missed some. Its more all in at once, no league experience in the team or manager, a bad start and then pressure on with a side who weren't gelled.

When bringing in new players if were winning and bringing in 1 or 2 its a lot easier, to bed them in.

Yes you've hit the nail on the head. Those wonderful moves are not frantic though, they seem to flow with accurate passes. We could have scored more today. The last 20 mins we were just spunking real opportunity with frantic misplaced passes. It's the one thing that's disappointed me this season. I realise it's L1 but they just need to try and let it flow a lot more. It's hard to explain it. More haste, less speed.

Yes Dougall looks a proper footballer unlike Williams (but MJ sure put a shift in today)

Now I watched the game pretty closely today and Williams was the equal of Dougall, I'm not sure why you didn't see that. I think he is a player and I liked the combination of the two as it gave the front players far more freedom and even though they did their defensive midfield duties brilliantly they also got the attacks going to so I think they could be a really good pairing for us.

Which is frustrating given what we brought critch in for and how we started off this season with lots of possession.

We need the solidity but also calmness on the ball under pressure, players to receive on the half turn and not just go back and less hoofball gifting possession.

Good to get the win as it was obviously pressure building and thats a factor in the second half, but lots still to improve.

I'd like to see us stick to our passing and attacking principles more, use long balls at times if needed but not as the only way.

I said on the match thread that he either goes on a run and scores - but nothing else.

His link up play and crossing ability is non existent. Hopeful with some coaching this can improve. But then again with his pace - if he had vision and crossing ability he'd be playing in the Premier League. These are the compromises of players in L1.

I don't think we have recruited badly at all.

We had 2 players missing today through suspension, another through CV-19 and Garbutt (off the top of my head) injured.

When have we ever had this much strength in depth?

We've had a wobbly few weeks, but a lot of the criticism has been totally over the top. Let's hope this leads to further improvement as the understanding and confidence grows throughout the team.

Sorry I think you misunderstand me. I agree with you. It’s just that MJ just doesn’t look like a natural footballer.

Dougall and Williams both looked more than comfortable today.

There were times in the second half where we needed more of an outlet after Burton changed tactics.

I could see a Dougall/Virtue combination working really well. Virtue as well has being defensive also offers us another weapon going forward due to his energy and striking ability.

Its also a strange old season too with at times weird results and unexpected results.

Agree thought he played well and wasn't afraid to put his foot in where it hurts (but caution only first game )🤞.
Also pleased Yates got off the mark will do his confidence a power of good .

Also noticed Dougall forever nibbling away in the refs ear, may help us get some of the 50/50 decisions.

I think this sums it up well. Sometimes we have enjoyed more possession in games but been far too pedestrian & passed the ball about slowly and got nowhere.
Quicker passing & movement is good as it gives opponents less time to regroup but at the end of the day you will get more errors. Its finding the balance. There are times to speed things up & also moments to play at a more measured tempo. Hopefully we learn & develop good game management skills.

It was certainly a good start by Dougall.
Kaikai also had a decent game, he just needs to add consistency to his performances.
Williams is my "eat your words" player. I would even go as far as giving him my MOM yesterday.
Having said that I agree with Rekt that a Dougall/Virtue pairing would be an interesting one.

i dont quite get why people have a go at willams he is neat and tidy on the ball breaks up play and often starts our moves we look a better side with him in it i thought dougall look good as well.

Just watching the highlights back and there's one when Dougall plays a quick ball into Yates who plays in Madine. That quick ball to Yates has been missing from our midfield. Anyone of our other options plays a sideways ball or backwards. He just bypasses their midfield with one simple ball played quickly. Really impressed with him and could be everything our middle has been lacking.

Didn’t see Saturday’s game but looking forward to seeing him tomorrow. Does he get forward much - worth a dabble on an opening goal?
