Drinkwater deal no go .

I think Appleton has become aware of the backlash the board are getting over signings not getting over the line.

Dougall Patino Fiorini or Wright is a good midfield, you need to have 3 at this level.

We also have Anderson coming back. I'd have preferred a better passing central midfielder like Stewart but one that plays football to be brought in.

Ultimately this is a player that desperately needs a decent club and his options are likely running out.... He's not good enough to bust a gut for.. We're taking a chance on an out of form player in the latter stages of his career (he's in no position to be calling the shots)

Move on to someone who wants to play football 👍

Glad to be honest not done enough over the last few seasons to warrant the risk or the money ... Move on and look elsewhere ..

I highly doubt he is desperate.

I’d rather have Ward than Drinkwater. At least he wants to be here and has shown a good attitude
Different types of player. It's what Appleton wants and what he can get the club to agree on. And with the names linked before and after the window closed he's after someone who can cope with that number 6 role if he can ever get a clear run at it with his 4-1-2-3 set up.

Attitude is all well and good, and of course it helps with team spirit. However, Ward when he gets injured they seem to be major, although he’s only had two they have both kept him out for over a year. He’s not getting any younger and any injuries are going to take longer to heal because of that. We don’t need to sign anymore walking wounded, which is why I’m far from impressed with Appleton signing Bridcutt. I know we haven’t signed him yet, but we will.

Slightly worrying that the club appeared willing to push the boat out and potentially break the wage structure for a player like Drinkwater whose best days are long behind him and has plenty of injury issues.

Same with Bridcutt, a past it pro who can’t stay fit and has had to drop to League One for the last 3 years. Very strange moves from the club in my opinion.

Bridcutt 33 Ward 27
He was nowhere near match fit when played pre season.
Do not think Appleton wants him though

They've tried to scattergun the last year of contract market and that hasn't worked so this is probably the next step to try and get a deal in lieu of a transfer fee. Appleton obviously pushing his board for help and trying to go into business for himself as he's not got what he wanted out of this summer.

If it's all loans and frees from the mind of the manager we don't really need big salaried CEOs and HOFOs as layers of a structure to me, but hey ho.

What ?

Sadly as we all know he will probably end up somewhere on £20 K. a week then spend most of the time injured or on the bench

Going back in for a third time to Oxford with Brannagan. Trying a couple of times with Sheffield Wednesday for Dele-Bashiru and then testing the water with Rotherham for Dan Barlaser to see if they'd take a fee before his contract is up. All attempts to strengthen in a position Appleton is still looking to fill now but with an out of contract player instead.

Did we go back in for B********?

I know that the Oxford Mail reported that we'd met the release clause, but that was on the same day that the new contract was announced, so I assume that was a prank planted by the player/agent/club, and doesn't necessarily mean that we were back in for him.

Appleton is like a leaky sieve when it comes to blurting out everything that's going on so would say so yep

I watched Drinkwaters Sky interview where he talked about his personal issues, time at Chelsea etc. He appeared quite genuine in that he said something like “ Its not about the money now, it doesn’t make you happy “ Clearly he’s had a rethink !!!

Kenny Dougall and Kevin Stewart were in the same situation (abliet not been on huge wages at Chelsea) before they signed for us. Both were holding out for a move to a Championship club, when it didn't happen they ended up in League One with us. What's the betting Drinkwater is still without a club in a month's time and ends up in L1 on less money than we were offering him?

Righto.

So other than the age, fitness, injuries, personal issues and high wages, he’s got a lot to offer.
😁

Golden Gamble.

Given the money he's made, it's one worth taking from his pov it seems. Me I'd be thinking short term deal and shop window.

The positive is MA has identified an area where he wanted the Club to spend quite big and MA had gone beyond the public perception of the player and was quite Appy to bring him in to improve the team.

I actually trust MA and his judgement in these matters and that is something I thought I'd never say 4 months ago.

I don’t think many Championship teams will take a look at him. His best bet is a team like us or another of the smaller teams who would give him the comfort to get his game back.

However the smaller teams have a reduced wage budget. So it’ll have to be an ambitious Div 1 team prepared to break the wage scale

Whatever we were offering, its more than he's on now.

I'm not too bothered tbh, but I just don't get footballers sometimes. Anyone who would prefer to sit at home than play football isn't someone we should be looking to sign. He may get a better deal elsewhere and if so fair enough, but we'll see. Championship clubs don't appear to be queueing up for him.

I don't think midfield now our priority with players coming back and our new signing. If I was to select two positions to fill I would chose centre half to replace Keogh and a forward

Ward got whacked twice winning bad passes in the reserve game yet he got up after treatment and played on. Deserves a chance .

One of those signings that you always knew would never go through. It would be a very unrealistic prospect for a player to go from being paid Chelsea wages to being paid Blackpool wages. Can't say I'm particularly disappointed though.
