Duchy of Lancaster

So the old Duke of Lancaster, the Queen, gave the net proceeds to charity, but the current Monarch thinks it’s better used to repair his property. No tax, no inheritance tax and stealing the widows mite.

No, even the Queen was sweeping up and pocketing unclaimed assets from people who died without a will or relatives.

As Andy Burnham said, “it’s a bizarre feudal practice” that has been going on for generations. Even when they claimed the residuals were going to “charity” they made sure all possible expenses and admin costs were deducted first.

Now we discover that the “charities” first in line for a handout were the Duchy’s own properties in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty or Special Scientific Interest. Basically any old excuse to justify keeping the cash in the family and subsidising the maintenance costs of estates, farms and buildings the monarchy rented out for their private gain.

£60 million and counting. Parasites.

I was reading a case a few weeks ago where a woman's step-dad died without leaving a will. He had no other family and they had both assumed she would inherit his small estate. As he hadn't officially adopted her the estate went to the Duchy of Lancaster rather than her.

That's scandalous

It needs to stop is what it is.

It needs re-diverting to charities on a permanent and legal basis. Shocking behaviour. Awful and wrong.
I'm not sure charity is the right place. They tend to be top heavy management and little actually goes to the good cause. My mate worked for one of the UK leading charities and he told me someone left 42k. 2k went to the bit you'd expect 40k swallowed up to cover costs of the charity.

King Charles is also the Lord of Mann so same applies to the Isle of Mann.
I used to always wind up the Southern softies down here when toasting the Queen by adding the “Duke of Lancaster, Lord of Mann” at dinners- got some strange looks!

Well it needs to go somewhere else ! Who do we even trust these days !

And if you work for 45 years, paying your NI and taxes in full, but end up helpless and have to go into a care home the council will take the lot if they can. At least you get something in return, even though you might be too gaga to appreciate it.

We've set up a Family trust which was quite expensive to do, but hopefully it will help prevent if not fully prevent anyone other than our direct decedents getting their hands on anything.

Interesting, how did you manage that? I recently did our will for the 1st time and wanted to do this but the solicitor scoffed at the idea! I also discussed giving my house to my son and again the 7 year rule was branded a myth. The local authority can still come after assets that are given away. In the end the will was very basic.

That's step families as much as anything.

When my Dad died, my step mother got everything, despite my Dad's will specifying I'd get certain possessions.

I know I'll get nothing when she goes. Made that clear.
Same happened to my brother in law. His dad remarried and when he died everything went to his wife. She died within 12 month, her son got the lot!
