East Stand- Name?

This was the subject of a poll last year, I voted Alan Ball then and I have done so again
I agree with Hazi that Bally was a poor manager for us, his season as manager was awful; but a WC winner should be celebrated

When you go to other clubs, many have famous names from decades ago on their stands.

I will always admire King Billy, but I doubt that visiting fans would instantly recognise the name.
Whereas 99% of fans would recognise the "Alan Ball" stand , which adds to the history of the club along with Stan Matthews, Stan Mortensen, and Jimmy Armfield. Perfect imo.

Tony Green all day long, superstar and still supports the club every game.
I have a lot of sympathy for that, however, the other 3 are not just part of BFC's history but English football history. I'm not sure TG is quite up there with the other 3.

Not sure how you can justify naming the stand after Billy Ayre and not Joe Smith if we're going for a manager.

Joe Smith won us the FA Cup, got us to three finals in total. Four top 6 finishes in the top flight, runners up to United once and 2 points off winning the title another. If it wasn't for WWII, he'd have most likely filled out our trophy cabinet a bit more. Longest serving manager to boot with an incredible win % in the top flight.

I am impartial as I have never seen either manage us, they were both managers of Blackpool before I was even born. I get Ayre was a fan favourite and all that, but I don't see how you can name a stand after someone who got us promoted from the 4th division over a manager with the aforementioned record.

It's a bit of a travesty there isn't any recognition of Joe Smith at Bloomfield Road if we're being honest.

Not too many will know who that is, me included, and I’m mid 40’s!

I like the thought of naming it though. We ought to name the North and West too.

Brett for the North for me. Unsure about the West. Maybe somebody long serving that is known by all!

Great topic though.
The North is already named. The Stanley Mortensen Spion Kop and the West is named The Stanley Matthews West Stand.

Brett for me. Needs somebody more recent, and he scored all four divisions for us and typifies what 'we are all about'.

Suddick was king and was with us a long time. Joe Smith won an f a cup, no other manager of Blackpool gets near that.

THE FRED PICKERING STAND
A nice reminded to the Nobbers each time they visit and see it printed on their ticket

Alan Ball left us age 21. And I don't think all the stands should be named after ancient history people, personally.

Heart says Billy Ayre. Head says Alan Ball.
Just the fact that Billy Ayre is in the conversation says so much.

I get it, Billy Ayre was a fans favourite, however he won one promotion in his tenure here
Should we erect a statue to Les Shannon, Sam Ellis, Ian Holloway and Neil Critchley who have all achieved the same?

The question is why isn't there a statue to the other world cup winner Blackpool provided in 1966?
Fair point 🧡

We're blessed with some great legends 🧡👍🏻

You can tell a lot of votes have been made by youngsters with Billy and Brett leading the poll.
However I personally think the stand should be named after not only a player who has performed for Blackpool but has done more for football in general.

Preston have a stand named after their 1888 winning side. It's been downhill ever since.

No, things like naming stands should be completely down to legacy - achievements that transcend generations. I'd hardly say 1966 is ancient history either.

Armfield = longest serving player, England captain ect. (could make an argument for World Cup winner, he received a medal eventually)
Morty = FA Cup winner, only player to ever score a hattrick in an FA cup final
Matthews = FA Cup winner, legend of the game, Ballon d'Or winner

Only valid shouts for me are people that compare with those achievements. That's Alan Ball, Harry Johnstone and Joe Smith pretty much.

I didn't see Ball in his pomp for Pool but how can you not honour a World Cup winner with a stand. Only 8 clubs in the League can say they had an England World Cup winner actually playing for them when the trophy was lifted. Granted Billy Ayre and Brett Ormerod mean more to me and should be honoured in other ways but from a massive historical point of view it just has to be Ball.

It shows we don't have to act tinpot in naming stands like the Nobbers have. Sir Tom Finney by al means but the rest, scraping the barrel.

Mortensen, Matthews, Sir Jim and Ball, absolute class acts.

Is the North not the Mathews and the West the Mortensen.

Has to be Brett Dave…..the only player to score for us in all four divisions and as far as I know nobody elsewhere has for any another side and it was he who put us in the Premier League only for you know who to take the monetary benefit…and you never know they might find the money from his transfer in a safe buried under Back Henry Street when the foundations are layed.

Hope to see you Saturday but these journeys over are getting harder these days but I have already bought the ticket ( in my old ST seat) so guess I’ll be there.
