Eggs

I’ve tried all types, cheap supermarket, free range, organic, medium, large, very large etc, etc, and I’ve come to the conclusion that there’s no real difference in taste, the yolk colour might change, but it seems to me the cheap ones are ok. That is of course if you’re not worried about how the birds are treated.
Anyone else got any suggestions about the best eggs?

Btw, I’ve always wondered what the first person thought when he picked up an egg, it broke in his hand and it ran through his fingers. My reaction would have been ugh, he must have thought, I could drop it in boiling water and boil it, break it in boiling water and poach it, drop it in a pan and fry it, scramble it etc. genius.

Had a couple of chickens a few years ago and could definitely taste the difference between them and cheap supermarket ones

Maybe it was a very very hot day,the egg fell onto a hard rock and hey presto fried egg😉.….as for the reply re the cow and milk the least said the better.🤔.
M&S Extra Large Free-range in this house especially boiled and with ” soldiers” but the yoke has to be thick but runny🥳

normally buy mine from a local farm and the are normally not more than a day old, and I can always taste the difference to even the super organic raised in a super pampered chicken spa supermarket versions, usually because pretty much all supermarket eggs are at least 3 to 4 days old. Used to keep chicken when i was a kid, and really fresh eggs have a different taste.

Are they genuinely free range I wonder.
Good point. Due to Bird Flu, Free Range were having to be kept inside, and so lost the free range label, although still sold in the same packaging.

As free range chucks have a choice, I have a vision in winter of the hatches being opened, one sticks its head out and said, sod that, staying in this week.

When we lived in Bowness, we got our eggs from Bannerig Farm ( on the left, second hill before Windermere coming in from the motorway). They definitely had more taste, and so fresh, they sat up beautifully when fried. You could see them in the field as you drove past.

As others have said we also had chickens. Yes. Very different flavour. Frankly might be a bit too strong for some tastes.

We haven’t replaced them for several reasons. Bird flu being one.

Our newest neighbour has four hens.He built an incredible fortress like coop but unfortunately one seems to think it is a cockerel but at least it doesn't crow at daybreak, well not yet anyway However to date no free eggs 🤔so will have to stick to our M&S first choice.

Duck eggs are far better than chicken eggs only tried them around a year ago but not had a chicken egg since, bigger yolk smaller white & best fried or poached,if you want scrambled eggs don’t bother they just taste the same as chicken eggs, more cholesterol so that’s one negative
its hit & miss whether supermarkets have them in but I’ve got lucky as some new customers of mine have a pond & 10 ducks so been having as free range as you can get
always fancied trying goose eggs and tried ordering online but they only did live chicks that I almost ordered by accident, apparently geese only lay at certain times of the year
