Embleton starting for Sunderland

Not saying Embo doesn't deserve a start in their team... but if we are sniffing around then what better way to up his value a tad by starting him in your first pre season?

Conspiracy theory mode off:

Of course, it could just be that they saw what he did with us last season and wonder if he'll fit in with their plans so giving him a try.

They are bound to give him a try. Johnson may simply want to show the fans that he's not a player they need to keep, but the simple explanation here is that Johnson is looking at the squad and working out what he wants for the season ahead.

Apparently, he was their most creative player v. Spennymoor. If none of his teammates can even look half decent against Spennymoor, they have no choice but to keep him. Time to move on right now and maybe see what happens in January or next summer after his contract has run out.

You gave up easily.

That's not giving up, it's waiting for the right time. We got him in January because they had too many options in his position at that time. Right now, they seem to have very few options so the likelihood of him being allowed to leave is far less.

Ah ok. He might move to us later in or at the end of the window. End of August. Or at whatever point Sunderland feels his position is covered. Could be January, could be the 12th of never.

I am friends with a Sunderland fan, and take this with a pinch of salt.

He's saying that Embleton will be in or around the first team and that Sunderland were arrogant to let him go out on loan in the first place. With him also being quite local, I would imagine he wants to make it at Sunderland before trying anywhere else. Good luck to the lad, hope he gets what he wants in this case.

Lee Johnson hardly making him feel special. Have to work his way in to the team and get a new deal. Hardly the heroes welcome he would have expected!

"Lee Johnson says that he wants to see Embleton play his way into the starting XI for the new season, and earn himself a new long-term deal at the club. We like him as a player," Johnson said.
"The argument where Embo is concerned is that we did the right thing, and have been almost bitten on the backside as a result with him getting promoted.
"But at the same time, we want our players to do well.

"There's no theory of not wanting players to do well, we are delighted that he has been a success at Blackpool.
"Obviously he now comes back into the fold as one of our academy players having had that positive experience, having given positive performances, and positive results.
"Of course, there will be interest in him because he has had a good year, but that interest would have to come with compensation and supersede our desire to give him a new contract.
"For me, the starting point with Embo is that he has every chance to go and earn himself a long-term contract at Sunderland over the next six months, it's as simple as that."

Speaking in May, Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman backed Embleton to be a key figure this season.
“Neil and the guys at Blackpool have done excellent with him, given him that platform and he's gone and performed," he said.
"He's demonstrated the ability to play at the level we need him to play at, so when he comes back here he can hopefully impact our team.”

If he's got several clubs offering him a long term contract he doesn't really need to earn one at Sunderland, unless that's what he wants. I'm just wondering if we will be prepared to pay a fee that will get him.

I can't believe Will Grigg is still there, I wonder how much he's on, it won't be peanuts, the 'negotiations' with Donald panicking and paying way over the odds so he had something to tell the fans were hilarious, especially as his second in command fella was trying to cut costs and raise revenue.

Shambles of a club.

Reading Lee Johnson's comments above, this phrase seems interesting.... "Of course, there will be interest in him because he has had a good year, but that interest would have to come with compensation and supersede our desire to give him a new contract." - To me, that says that he is available but only if the money is right? I guess that's always true for any player, but it does sound a little like they are open to offers... so the question then is how badly do we want him and how much are we prepared to pay? There will be a lot of good loans and released players around, so it must be a tricky balancing act... For me, it's a case of "in Critchley we trust" - if he does sign for us, great, but if not I'm sure we will have our eye on other options...

The real issue will be if they offer him a new contract and he accepts. Embleton may want to run down his contract to give him better options. They have a number of their better players that have run down their contracts this summer, have not accepted new ones and are likely to leave. They will not want the same situation with Embleton by delaying a new contract offer too long. It all is about how much NC wants him and how much they would be prepared to pay. Sunderland fans have banded about figures of £1m and above, but that is nonsense for a largely unproven player with less than 12 months contract left and with very little cash available in fooball outside the PL

Wigan now in for Charlie Wyke for that same reason. Nobody left for Embleton to pass to there the way they're heading.

I wouldn't rush it with him, if he goes elsewhere or stays then that's how it is, but I'd keep an eye on how Sunderland behave towards funding their own recruitment, if they start struggling to even offer trialists a contract. Might get desperate and accept an offer to buy the one year retainer they put him on.

I'm sure Critchley knows where to find another player equally as good.
Embleton will probably be advised by agents run his contract down, we may get him in January if that is the case.
I love the way that everyone involved in Sunderland talk like playing for them is the pinnacle of anyones career. They are a basket case, league one club with massively entitled fans that if they are lucky will probably finish about sixth next season and fail again in the playoffs. Playing for them is more of a curse than a prize given the vast over expectations of the fan base and the pressure of playing for such a 'big' club.
Maybe the 'likes of Blackpool' will get their man, perhaps not before January though.
