End of an era?

I am a creature of habit. Thursday night always has been, and always will be lads night out. Since I moved to PLF those Thursdays have been spent equally in the Town Hall and Thatched (Even though the beer in there has fairly been criticised as 'hazy', it always tastes good).

Last night as usual, a couple in the Town Hall, then over to the Thatched (looking forward to a pint of DDH Citra, or perhaps Amarillo). Neither were on, but that issue paled (pun intended) into insignificance at the noise emanating from within. There was a DJ......IN THE THATCHED!!!! Playing loud music through his own speakers. WTF??? The great bastion of old mans drinking pub with a DJ???

Must be a special occasion thought I, no matter. Had a pint and enquired at the bar. No, its going to be music every Thursday.

Maybe the landlord thinks Poulton is short of places for the young to have a night out, so The Thatched must cater for them? I don't f*cking thing so.

Last night will be my last visit to The Thatched on a Thursday night whilst this madness persists

Thursday was always a night out for weekly paid workers and yes Poulton always used to be packed when I was a Thatched regular.
But what have we now?...no CAMRA discount, high prices - including their own brewed stuff, which doesn't travel from any distance - and now, a DJ every Thursday?! Poulton has become a nouveau riche playground. Not a decent boozer in sight.

Who can forget the posers' paradise of the Illawalla?

I first went to the illawala in about 1986.
It was a New Year’s Eve.
My older bro dressed me in one of his outfits. I still remember it was navy blue cords, a white shirt with brown horizontal stripes, and a brown cord jacket woth a faux leather brown collar. I don’t think I’ve ever looked so dapper.
I can vaguely remember a big dance floor and a balcony where you could look down on the dance floor and which led to a counter where they served pizzas. I may have remembered this wrong as it was so long ago.
My bro told me how to stand to look cool. He said I was standing too stiff and he was showing me how to lean on the bar. 🤣🤣🤣
Anyways, we met two older women. They were much older than me. I think we had a kiss or two but then I said ‘mum it’s time for you to go home’. (That’s a sick joke - it wasn’t my mum 🤣🤣)
Alas it was knocked down. And replaced with houses. It was a fantastic venue as far as I remember and a real local gem of a place.

Never liked Boddies
So pub crawl was Falcon, Barn and Royal Oak, 2 are long gone

Never been in the Thatched but back in the '90s, when I was a member of Poulton-Le-Fylde Photographic Society we used to pop into the Golden Ball for a pint afterwards and then a bag of chips from the now long-gone chippy next door (but one?)

Ended up there on a mates stag night, must have been during its final hurrah as I dimly remember dancing on the stage and spotting a f*cking big hole in the floor!

I think drinking in Poulton started to go down hill when they ditched the vaults. Had many a good evening in the Golden Ball or Queens, not forgetting the Royal Oak. Now full of trendy types I often take a short cut past the Alley or whatever it’s called. Full of Guardian reader types full of themselves. The bar next to that has loud music blasting out. Town is a Sh1t hole now. Don’t even get me started on the young kids roaming around with ruck sacks on their backs coming out of the station ever morning.

Lived in Poulton for 20 years. Loved the town because of its local respect for the centre mixed with a good night out once I was done with Blackpool nightlife where I grew up. Now; Friday nights its full of dickheads on Charlie giving it big around the top of Breck Road. Last Saturday afternoon I went into the centre for a bottle of wine and ordinary locals were having to go about their business among drunks who needed to buy a can of beer on route from one pub to the next. Week before I had to pick my wife up from the train station and had drunks shouting 'Blackpool are xxxx shite in response to the pool scarf I keep over my car seat. Don't care if I seem like an old git but it's quite sad.

Next thing they'll be taking down the signed Margaret Thatcher portrait in Tory Corner.

What has the world come to?

The Thatched is a shadow of its former self. I think they have also stopped brewing their own beer? Sadly all the good pubs of the past - Thatched, Falcon, Royal Oak, Golden Ball - have either closed down or changed beyond recognition

Bit of a bugger when you can't get a quiet pint or two. 😟
