ENG v SRI LANKA - ODI - WC23

England win another toss and play like idiots. After doing so well 4 years ago, this time will be on the early flight home. Lord knows what India and Australia are going to do to us. 😞

I tuned in this morning hoping to see something from this England team. How disappointing.

Just all over the place. It's all wrong from the top. Wouldn't have Bairstow or Malan anywhere near opening the innings. And I feel it all stems from us not being able to get off to a start. all the other top teams have explosive openers. We just have Malan feathering everything and a totally out of form middle order Bairstow. Then we have a test player coming in at 3. Stokes in and hasn't played hardly any short format cricket too.

The whole lineup just feels like a few old mates jolly.

We are much better than this but there is no heart or desire in this side, it's like they couldn't be arsed from the start, that or they were so arrogant they just thought they could swipe their way to victory. Lose this and they need a big shake up, Butler is clearly not captain material and the side has been swapped around far too much each game.

It's a mess, it really is. Applying 'Bazball' seems to have removed our brains. 50 overs gives you time to assess the wicket and get yourself in. All that time in the IPL and none of them know how to play on an Indian wicket. Pathetic.

This team played brilliantly between 2016 and 2019. It was really entertaining and won England a World Cup.

But sadly all good things come to an end and it’s 2023 now.

One concern I have is that a large number of players from this squad have just been signed up for two or three year central contracts by the ECB. Far too many in my opinion.

I understand that the ECB are concerned about offers from the T20 circuit but giving lots of 32-33 year old players two to three year contracts just perpetuates this team which is past its best. It also reduces the scope in the next couple of years for the ECB to keep up and coming English players in the system.

Transforming world champions into a team getting hammered every match. Quite an achievement. Sweeping changes needed

Needs a new captain from the outside for a start.
Hard to see an obvious candidate other than maybe Sam Curran or maybe Brooke?

Our biggest problem this time round has been the bowling as it seems like any bowler who is effective in this format (particularly in India) has the same bone structure of Danny Coid.

I think there are multiple problems. Yeah bowling has been poor but batting has as well. All fantastic when on top, but when against it a bit and needing to see out a bowler or not hit every ball to the rope but just stay around there doesn't seem the ability nor the team spirit to do so.

On the Captain, I really don't know. I'm sure if the T20 is looked at there maybe one there, perhaps Salt could do it??

I’d like to know how much they get paid as I am sure when I have a poor day in the rain (yes I work in it, unlike them) I am just about worth my hourly rate !

So happy that I've already committed to go and follow England in the Caribbean in December 😩..... Can't see a clause in my holiday insurance that allows me to cancel 🤷🫣

Where is Phill Salt? Why on earth is he not there? Just ridiculous. I'd have Ben Duckett in there opening with him too. Yes he's done well at test level but his forte before breaking through at test level was being a phenomenal white ball player too. He's also captain material.

I'd be more excited having Jacks, Rossington or Smeed opening the batting. So many good one day players overlooked by the same old faces.
