pretty bloody uninspiring - basically same batting line up that struggled in Windies.. Brook added but with Bairstow in the squad probably wont play! Pope recalled and is rewarded for 12 months of failure by being moved up to 3!!!

odd!

due to injuries the pace bowling picks itself ...

but what the bloody hell does Parkinson need to do to be given a chance???

Ben Stokes (Durham, captain), James Anderson (Lancashire), Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Zak Crawley (Kent), Ben Foakes (Surrey, wk), Jack Leach (Somerset), Alex Lees (Durham), Craig Overton (Somerset), Matthew Potts (Durham), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Joe Root (Yorkshire).

How the flying fuck Craig Overton and Jack Leach are anywhere near that squad I have no idea. Crawley has had a nightmare 12 months and I agree about Pope. Poor squad.

Jimmy and Broady will come flying out of the block to paper over the cracks. We have no decent top 3 batsmen and haven't since Cook retired.

Jack Leach tried and failed v Matt Parkinson who never gets a start. Welcome to the new dawn of enterprising cricket.

Has there ever been a more depressing site in English test cricket than Overton repeatedly banging the ball into the middle of the pitch at 75mph against the Windies recently? Is Derek Pringle in line for a recall? On Leach, I suppose that you could say that he is better than Iain Salisbury. This is the worst test team we have had since pre Nassar Hussain. Was Atherton's team worse?
Stokes certainly has a job to do. Our bowling is actually Ok if we could keep everyone fit.

Why has Root moved back to four after his best year at 3?

Now he has lost the captaincy he does not wish to take responsibility to help the team. Go for it Joe, let some other sap face the bullets. A true leader of men, or an action Boycott would have been proud of?

On the other hand, and there is always one of those, Joe is moving back to four because Stokes wants him there, he thinks it gives the order a better balance. If one or even two of the front three could get a few runs is probably a fair comment, its just that word if that gets in the way.

Too kind to the Yorkies.

Tough one, when do you pull the rip cord and start a fresh with young blood.

I think Parky will get in the squad soon, but I'm also surprised he's not been selected after his recent performances.

As a Lancashire supporter, I'm quietly pleased that Keaton Jennings hasn't been picked, especially after a century plus a double century in his first two games. With England's opening bat weaknesses, that's very surprising. Not sure what more Lanky players can do, our gain though.

He's in the Dom Sibley bracket and Rory Burns of not being good enough for international cricket but too good for domestic.

I was hoping for a bit of a shake up .... Lees, Crawley, Pope Root, Bairstow and Stokes - is not much different to what lost in the WIndies

Woakes, Archer, Wood, Robinson, Stone and Mahmood being unavailable leaves Overton unfortunately. We all know the selectors love a bowler who can ‘bat a bit’ and Overton fits the bill. He shouldn’t be anywhere near this side really but he is due to the injuries. I’d throw in the Durham lad but I doubt it will happen.

Leach needs a good first test otherwise Parky will get the call up and may even play this time.

I think Crawley is worth sticking with and Lees will get another series at least. Root, Stokes and Foakes pick themselves. The ginger clique will probably mean Bairstow and Pope get the remaining spots.

Bowling wise be interesting to see how they would pick if all fot and avaliable ??

I guess it would depend on location and conditions ? one of Anderson / Broad? Wood, Archer ... and a spinner with Stokes as 5th bowling option ... would be quite tasty!

There's plenty of criticism here but not too many solutions.

The simple fact is we've not got a queue of talented young Test cricketers just waiting for a call up, hence the selections we've see this week.

Where is the next Jimmy and Broady? Nowhere to be seen. There must be a couple of openers that can survive the new ball for more than six overs, or maybe not.

Young, talented spinners?, a few have looked promising and then disappeared in to county oblivion. Brash middle order stroke makers? They appear and next you know they're averaging 19/20 against medium paced County trundlers.

The whole County game is desperate for a major shake up, but tradition and history seems to be stopping it.

Playing second fiddle to white ball cricket does the County game no favours, with spells in April and May, then back end of August and September. When they're in the height of summer they're trying to knock the cover off a white ball instead of honing patient crafted innings and bowlers are trying all kinds of freaky balls rather than developing a rhythm

We have that left over test v/s India to play as well as the other tough gigs against the Kiwis and the Saffers. Going to be a tough old summer methinks.

I get the feeling that Archers career is going to blighted by constant injury issues I'm afraid.

Some players are just a walking sick note.
Similar story for Mahmood . . two natural successors to Jimmy & Broad but both struggle with injuries. Wood is similar.
