Watched this again last night funny how a bit of luck or should I say loads of luck and time can change someone's opinion on a manager he was getting pelters before the tournament for poor performances and team selection .Looking back now how bad were Robson's tactics emptying midfield and playing a sweeper and still not changing it time and time again we were overun in midfield .We were lucky against Belgium as well only playing well in 1 game being against a workmanlike Germany .Felt sorry for Gaza in that midfield although he did show his class on the few occasions we created something

Yeah. I remember us being robbed against Germany and should’ve been rightful champions. Drew with Ireland, needed extra time to beat Belgium and Cameroon. Really did flatter to deceive

Well in 2018 we beat Tunisia with the last kick of the game and beat Columbia on penalties. We beat Panama and Sweden comfortably.
We lost to Belgium twice and Croatia in the semis. So played 7 lost 3 and the team returned as heroes.
Flattering to deceive seems to be a bit of a theme

Robson mainly got pelters because the FA told the press he was leaving for Eindhoven after the tournament, they didn't tell the press he was leaving because the FA had cancelled his contract.

What made me smile was Ron Atkinsons commentary. The suggestion Mark Wright could go and be a decent winger after his head injury made me smile.
Plus his 'they don't like it up 'em' about crosses into Cameroons area.

Yet some think we were awesome in both tournaments.

1990 we weren't great. Drew with Ireland and could have lost. Drew with Holland which wasnt a great game. Only just beat Egypt, scabbed a late late winner v Belgium and beat Cameroon who were the better side mostly. Unlucky against the Germans but our luck had been in previous games.

The fact you call the German team workmanlike doesn’t exactly underpin your view with solid knowledge. They were the best team in the tournament by a country mile and had at least 2 players (Matthaus and Klinnsman) that would get into Germany‘s all time best X1. And Andy Bremhe would also probably be in there too, while Rudi Voller and Jurgen Kohler were world class players.

I’d agree we got some luck on the way, but look at the players in that England side and you can see plenty who were good players over a sustained period - Walker, Butcher, Pearce, Gazza, Platt, Waddle, Beardsley and Lineker.
