Erdogan

Quelle surprise, 5 more years in power, the dictator who owns the majority of the media output, and imprisons anyone who gets too vociferous against him. Sadly he’ll now move further away from the secular state set up by Kemal Atatürk into a more radical Islamist state, bad news for the progressive youth of Turkey and the West.

He was handing out money to voters outside polling stations.

There needs to be a military coup there, otherwise he's moving away from a secular state.

I thought he might be a gonner this time.
Not a chance while he holds all the Ill gotten cards, had a place in Bodrum for 20 years, and have a few Turkish friends, after the so called ‘Coup’ in 2016, he removed by force anyone who opposed him, Putin actually congratulated him on his reelection before the final result was in!
Im there now. The Turks I have spoke to were not suprised by the result.
Same with the Turks we know in Bodrum, Erdogan has everything sown up, the opposition were never going to get in. Anyway enjoy your holiday Nigel.🌞

Thanks Levi. It's a bummer, isn't it. So close as well - officially. I can't see the EU welcoming them with open arms but then, there's the NATO angle. Bloody tricky this.

From what I can glean he’s moved away from wanting EU membership now, and is looking inward to “ Make Turkey Great again” now where‘ve we heard that rhetoric before. It is tricky as Turkey is in such a strategic position on the world stage.

I have business interests in Turkey. I’m shocked and appalled that he’s in again. The people do not deserve that.

Kemal would be turning in his grave.

The recent two part documentary on his rise to power and subsequent 2+ decades in charge was very interesting.

Spent a lot of time in Istanbul over the past decade and my contacts there despise him. They were really optimistic that it was over for him this time. 😣

Agreed completely.

He spent fortunes building massive mosques in the villages in the East of Turkey. Collecting those votes as opposed to investing in education or health care.

Plus trousering as much as possible along the way

The Brexit vote was partially won by claiming 10 million Turks were on their way here. Another lie.

They tried Olly,he crushed them

It's a bit like Russia but many Turks crave stability- economic and political- so that got him over the line as well as rigging ghe election .

Pleased it could never happen here
