ECB Statement:
Following the number of wickets that fell on day 1 at Chelmsford, the home of Essex, the provisions for a pitch inspection were automatically triggered.
The inspectors noted that visitors chose to bat and therefore this factor has been taken into account, as has the hosepipe ban and the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. The inspectors further noted that, 'In the spirit of cricket' Essex made the hugely magnanimous decision to score a similar score to the visitors to make it a proper game of cricket - even though the situation was caused by the visitors, whom the ECB have had serious issues of points deduction with this season. Having carefully reviewed the footage of the away team's poor batting display in their 2nd innings, the pitch inspectors have recommended to the ECB that the visitors are fined a minimum of 15 points, with Essex being commended for upholding the values of the game.
The ECB will release its full statement tomorrow having considered the above. However, it is likely that a fine of at least 30 points could be forthcoming as a result of the ECB's policy of putting Lancashire to the sword at every opportunity, justified or not.
