Few Thoughts on Today................

Today I witnessed the best 45mins of football all season.
Have seen something similar but tailed off after 20 mins. ( Burton at home as an example)
The fans were fantastic and responded accordingly (Poss the best all season, apart from Forest game)
What CJ is all about is anyones guess, is he left/ right footed, I would strongly suggest hes been played out of position and I would not start him. I blame the manager hes either the fastest winger in the div and let the opp worry about him or not. Shove him out on the wing and feed him, that will give any visiting team lost to think about. The lad cant trap a bag of sand and doesnt have the body language to tell me hes really gonna beat anyone when he gets on the right positions.
We are light weight in midfield and never throttle a game, today was there for the taking, losing Kenny, (rights and wrongs) might cost us. He was a lynchpin up to pre Xmas.
Dont like the lack of urgency when we are chasing a game. too much fck about tippy tappy footy which at times costs us when we get ball watching
Dembele is a joy to watch but where he was 2nd half is anyones guess
Jordan Rhodes miss slowed down on TV is a different game, genuine CF that chased down a loose ball and sadly ball didnt drop as quick as it might.

Thats 4 points dropped against Charlton a team we should have put to the sword, and there are others. Where I am not a Critchley critic, the blame lies somewhere and we look WEAK in leadership and to take the game to the opposition.

Whereas no team has a divine right to anything, failure to at least make the play offs would be a huge underachievement for this side. No doubt the Addicks are thinking the same, considering the strike force they have and the expectations that go with it.

Overall, would give CJ a sabbatical and look at changing things

CJ isn't a wing back and he certainly isn't a right wing back considering he's left footed

Agree about midfield as well we need a ball winner and proper leader in there

We have the players to be higher in this league and that's the issue of why fans are so frustrated

Oh and Gabriel needs to start every match if fit with Lyons as back up

It's really annoying it didn't happen, the finishing was really poor and a little unlucky for some maybe, but we should have been way ahead.

That would be 4 straight wins then and real pressure on those above with real momentum too.

If you're going to go up and catch up, you have to win games like that and for me it was worrying when we conceded, as we didn't look like a team with belief capable of overcoming a setback.

Again, if you're to go up, especially in the playoffs, you'll need that, plus a solid defence...

There was loads of time left when they scabbed a goal and the mentality wasn't right for me.

If we don't make it it's clear why and that's despite on our day being better than most in the league, but the winning mentality to win ugly away or to come back from a setback just isn't there as much as others.

In the last couple of minutes Charlton had a corner and we still pulled 11 back. Where is the ambition to win the game? CJ and Dembele can not defend and should be on the half way line in the hope we can make a quick break. Still think NC is too cautious.

We weren't great after Charlton equalised, I think this was partly down to not having the options on the bench to change things offensively.
We had Gabriel, Pennington and Virtue on the bench, this covered wing backs, centre backs and defensive centre midfield so what was the point in Connolly?
Leave him out and put Dale or Lyons on the bench instead and we have more attacking options.
We could've gone 4 3 3 with attacking full backs but all we could do was change like for like and it had stopped working.

Virtue is far better pushing us forward than Norburn and should have been on much earlier when we lost momentum

The bottom line is that we've played worse and won, and on another day we score 5 or 6 today. Just didn't happen, but it wasn't for the lack of effort or not creating chances. Play like that every week and we win far more than we draw or lose.
On another day we'd have beaten Port Vale @ home, Exeter away, Orient @ home and Wycombe and Fleetwood away but we didn't.
It's all about the here and now and I will continue to revert to the slow start to the season.
Another 5/6 points from those games and yesterday, as bad as it was, would be nothing short of a blip.
Another month and we're getting to the nitty gritty part of the season where teams are fighting for promotion/playoffs as well as fighting off relegation.
Play like we did yesterday and we MAY win more than we lose, nothing is guaranteed.

Should have had greater choice of players with attacking attributes on the bench, agree about Virtue, and Connolly was a waste of a place on the bench at home against a struggling team.

For Gabriel to CJ not to start at right wing back the manager would have to admit he's been wrong for over half a season, not going to happen.
Coincidentally we only play with one inverted full back now, we no longer need one on the left apparently.

Not really as Gabriel has only just returned from injury

What is that based on he has offered very little (barring the Wigan game) in any league game hes been invovled in this season. Hes miles off the pace and no where near as good technically as Carey.

Carey is technically good until you put him in a game of football. Then he disappears for 95% of the time, occasionally popping up to score.

It's as opposed to Virtue, who huffs and puffs but can't pass, can't tackle and doesn't shoot.

Carey is 1 year older than Apter. Who everyone creams themselves over and has shown far more than Apter at a far higher level - let alone Virtue.

Virtue has scored a few for us. A beauty at Sunderland. And he can read a game. So will have to disagree.

"Dembele is a joy to watch but where he was 2nd half is anyones guess"

When he wasn't getting the crepe kicked out of him as usual, he was busy either scoring or celebrating it.

Basil, I see your point but just imagine if we’ve hadn’t left 2 up front and they’d have scored
Can you imagine the furore on here?
I am a massive advocate of leaving 2 players on the halfway line when defending corners, free kicks or whatever because instinctively the opposition will leave 3 back to mark them.
The majority of teams at this level and lower will always bring everyone back to defend set pieces in their own half but to me it makes no sense whatsoever.
If someone could give a valid reason why then I would love to know.

I do get that, but at times it just seems to sum up a deeper mindset.
