First opposition player you remember

Alan Mullery, when he played for Fulham in the ‘70s. A bit slow but he still had a lot of class, and possesed legs like tree trunks

By no means the first I remember, but the one that for some reason sticks out is I have vivid memories of Mike Sheron absolutely tearing us apart for Barnsley.

How am I supposed to remember as it was 80 years ago. 🙁
Also it was War-time and some of Pools' players were from other teams.
I do remember Stan Matthews in the War-time team, but I think he was a Stoke City player still. 1944/5

My first game was against Watford in 1979 and they had Luther Blissett up front - fast, strong and black so stood out a mile for me. Went on to play for England so I must have had an eye for talent even as a young kid!

Jack Charlton, a neighbour took me to see us vs Leeds in the run up to the World Cup, to 'see the internationals' in the two sides (Sir Jim was the first pool player I remember seeing on the pitch).

Jeff Astle. He scored a power header from a corner in the NW after about 2 mins and I can remember thinking 'crickers had that gone the other side of the post it would have knocked me off the kop wall'.

Ron and Paul Futcher... remember one of them getting carried off at Bloomfield road with no ear attached to his head.

Wasn't until I got into my teens that I started taking notice of opposition players.
Take a bow Alan Groves, Blackpool v Oldham circa '77
Really happy when he signed for us, sadly died of heart failure aged 29😔

Charlie Hurley captain of Sunderland. The ground was full of black cats and they chanted his name all the way through the game.
I'd never heard anything like it

Frank Worthington - Huddersfield Town c. 69/70/71. Flash sod, we thought - but with the ability to back it. 👏

Great player - saw him many years later @ Leeds Utd & it was worth the admission money just to watch his warm-up tricks. Even later, saw him playing for Guiseley as a veteran & still a class above the rest.

Was that in the rough game against Oxford?
If so, he decked someone (Bentley?). The bloke who was stood next to my dad in the West Paddock, went on the pitch and hit him as he was sent off. My dad couldn’t believe it as the bloke was always very quiet.
Yep that’s the one.
Bb slapped some spit on Houseman’ bald patch he went ballistic and police involved.
I was in the west paddock and remember it like it was yesterday.

Yes, you’re right. They played like psychos
Peter Houseman punch never connected, Bentley had wet his finger and stroked it across Housemans bald patch, he turned round took a wild swing at Billy Bentley who went down as if poleaxed looked up and winked at the crowd in the west paddock as Houemann got his marching orders
