Floodlights

There’s an article in the Grrrzette about floodlights.

Did all Saturday football matches then kick off at 3pm?
Now, if so, what happened in winter when the dark nights descended, round about half-time?

Have we got anyone old enough (+ marbles) to recall the pre 1958 games?

I certainly went to games in those days and I think they kicked off at 2pm in the darkest days and I seem to remember evening games kicking off at maybe 5.30pm when the days were getting longer. On Christmas day there were morning kick offs. I also remember floodlights coming in and attending early games under floodlights but can`t remember when or which games.

I recall we played a friendly against Hearts to coincide with the switching on of our floodlights in the late 50's.

I think kick off times were 14:00, 14:15, 14:30, 14:45 and 15:00 depending on the month.

Any midweek games in the winter months kicked off in the afternoon, and if it was a big game, workplaces used to shut down early.
Aah. Realised this afto, I might phrased the question poorly. That makes you informed and intelligent 👍

Never really understood why we stick around until 3pm when it's dark when they start and bloody freezing!

A 2pm kick off in the winter would make so much more sense.

I'd agree with that today .. am wearing 7 layers about to go out and the longer I leave it the less appealing it's becoming!!

the rugby league at Borough Park was always 2pm as there were no floodlights... got dark near the end somedays
