Footballers wages in normal times?

There's no doubt in my head that now all high earners should be contributing to support the survival of the industry, of society etc

However, it struck me as interesting that I can't think of many other industries where it's the actual producers of the product who are the best paid.

Footballers earn more than their managers, administrators etc. Only the investors are richer than them, and even then, they don't generally derive their profits from football - they're usually rich from something else (e.g. oil money or hedge funds or whatever)

It made me think a bit about my attitude towards wages.

Given what money comes into football in normal times, where should the money (in normal times) go if not to the players?

I'm off work but being paid. I wouldn't object if asked to donate a small percentage of my wage during these terrible times.
100k plus per week that PL players get is galling but I suppose what the government get back through high tax earners is a counter argument.

I agree.

Question is though, where else should the money go. The money is coming into the game (normally) and if footballers wages are galling (which they are) - how else should it be spent?

If you cut or limited wages, the money would still be there.

100k a week in the Premier is bottom line these days with a good few players earning 300k-400k a week it wouldn’t surprise me in the average was 200k maybe even more.

Further more I find it pretty disgusting one of the richest men in the country worth 4.3 billion yes billion is the main instigator in all this.

Interesting you say about the average wage. I watched the docu series about Sunderland and it stated that the average wage in the Premier league was 66k per week (last season) 14k pw in championship and 2k in league one. They were highlighting the fact that the club just couldn't keep paying prem wages in the third tier. You are correct many players are on over 200k per week at the big clubs, but clubs such as Burnley, Bournemouth, Sheff Utd, Watford would never be able to pay one player that sum. Not even sure Everton could?

I wonder if Gordon "I should have been sacked months ago" Taylor has taken a pay cut from his £2million+ salary?

They're still paying plenty STE. I saw some data that suggested the Blades were the lowest payer in the EPL and their average salary was circa £700k per annum.

I have no issue with player salaries. Look at US sport or the film industry. The talent get's the big bucks. Whether any of them are really worth it is immaterial if someone is wiling to pay it. Always seems to me that footballers are an easy target - could it be because they are young, often poorly educated and dare I say it, black...? They get paid a salary that is relevant to their industry as it generate billions in revenue for clubs and TV networks. Premium brands see the exposure and want a bit of it. That should rightly be going back to those playing the game, not those earning a living off the back of it.

I'd add that this has nothing to do with the situation of what they're currently being paid and their employees using tax payers money to pay for low-paid 'support' staff. The PFA need to get the PR shit together and recognise that this is embarrassing for them as a body. We can also see that just a 10% salary cut for all players in the EPL would make a huge saving and ensure those who can't afford to be out of work are supported. I dare say that this is a result of a lack of Scottish influence in the EPL. Big union fans like Dalglish and Fergie would have got the ball rolling...

Straighters is right. Players' wages are driven by economics -- supply and demand. As long as there's big money in the game from the media and advertising the wages will be high.

The current issue is whether players should set aside their contracts temporarily to help low-paid workers who are having their wages reduced or stopped altogether. It seems so obvious to most of us that they should, but the PFA and some ex-players are living in a dream world divorced from the rest of us. They've been cocooned and pampered all their lives and haven't matured -- it's time for them to grow up and recognise what it's like in the real world.

Bit of a myth that players earn more than their managers used to be the case not any more.
Pep for example is on 15 million a year Klopp the same there ain't that many players earning that kind of dough.
