Fourth Test - India v England

A fine battling recovery and also a clear reminder that 'Bazball' works for players with limitations but is not needed for class acts like Joe Root. Good to see him back and scoring runs after looking all over the place in the last few games.

As has been said, we'll find out how good that score is in due course, but those partnerships with Foakes and now Robinson have given us something to bowl at. Very surprised India didn't take the new ball based on everything that was being said though. Will be interesting to see how quickly they mop things up tomorrow when (you'd presume) they do take it.
They will definitely take the new ball first thing tomorrow. New ball, new day, tail enders. If they don’t Sharma needs sacking.🤣

After that initial flurry, the pitch settled considerably. Still a good score in the circumstances. Need another 75 or so to really capitalise and set a decent total.

What's the odds on Root getting out in the first over tomorrow?

Pretty high I'd think. A new ball and new morning will be the hardest time to bat.

Not many high scorers kick on next day. Another 5 runs perhaps.

Finally Joe Root wakes up and smells the coffee, if he plays proper Test cricket instead of all these fancy one day shots me may get back to being the Test batsman he once was instead of gifting his wicket all the time.

His test average has actually improved since Stokes became captain but know what you mean.

I honestly think some of these England cricketers are just plain dumb and stupid.

Ollie Robinson had played beautifully all morning as him and Root had pushed the scoreboard along quite nicely with no chances given by playing simple conventional Test cricket and he goes and tries one of those reverse sweeps for the first time and gets caught behind.

Edit to add, the next idiot Bashir comes out and behaves like it's a T20 match and wildly swings and joins Robinson back in the hutch getting caught for a duck.

What is the matter with these players? Joe Root is cruising along at 120 not out and all you need to do is keep him company by batting sensibly and you play like that?

Absolutely numbskulls. 😩

Agree it was very disappointing losing the last 3 wickets for just 6 runs just needed one of these to keep Root at the crease and it could have been nearer 400 that said I think getting to 350 was key and I think everyone on here would have taken that for a first innings score.

India just lost their second wicket 86/2.

Early days but is Bashir that spinner we’ve been looking for since Swann retired?
I was just thinking the same. It would be great to have a genuinely dangerous spinner who is young enough to really develop into a mainstay.

Of course one thing is turning it in India, another is doing the job in a damp English summer.

The job England have done with these inexperienced spinners is incredible really. Before this tour, no one would have said they were ready and yet they're at times outbowling India's world class spin.

Stokes is so good at captaining spin. He's just not frightened of them getting hit and virtually every spin bowler who comes under his wing seems overall to emerge from it a better player.

It also speaks to me about the way we do things. There's this belief that players have to be 'ready' to step up - what we've seen with England cricket in last 18 months is throwing in some players who have the attributes and giving them the chance to learn on the job. I wish we'd take that risk a bit more. No one on earth would have marked down the Somerset kid as 'ready' and you'd likely also look at Hartley as 'a white ball player' who lacks FC experience. We've taken two 2nd pick county back ups and outbowled the world's greatest (conditions, resources, finance) spin nation by being brave and trusting some very raw ability and discovering that it can mature very quickly.

In conclusion, Peterborough under Ferguson is more Bazball (Dazball?) and us under Critchley, we seem a lot more like an attempt to build England under Flower and Strauss. That was a great team but the wheel has turned it feels like.

Really enjoying this series.

Me too . . Great to see the positivity of the Stokes / McCullum team working in the hardest of all places.

Would be great to get them all out by close of play 👍

Think I might have a burst of seam at the tail and little turn of the arm for Joe Root. Bashir must be tiring by now.

Could hardly have gone better for us today. Let's get another before close. Jimmy maybe, aiming at those cracks?

I thought Stokes was going to have a bowl in this game? Perfect moment for a quick burst from the captain.

... how can we get the best batsman out but struggle with numbers 7-10, this wicket they have put on 41, our last 3 went 4 nought, its small margins in cricket them runs could be costly, just bowl at the blinking stumps,

It happens . . As you say so far they have put on 41 for the 8th wicket . . . we put on 102 so not sure what your point is?

...my point is this seems 2 be a regular occurrence, we get 2 the tail and struggle , as the late great Fred Trueman said after bowling a number 11 out, that delivery was wasted on ue lad ...

Engcestershire should have a lead of 100 (no Lord Lucan or Shergar involved) and then they can justifiably give it the Bazbollox and probably set up the win which would make the final test perfect for advertising Test cricket.

Great stuff. Shame India are missing Jasprit and Bumrah- 2 great bowlers.

What is it about the Indians that they have one name on the scorecard and another on the shirt?

I like Baseball, they need to stick with it, you can't faff about with it, either do it or not, when it goes wrong it looks horrible but it has gone right a lot more and other teams look terrified of us!

Well having just tuned in and getting over the disappointment of a first innings lead of just 46 I’ve just seen Pope and Duckett dismissed in 2 balls 19/2. 😩

I woke up late and never expected that Indian batting revival.

Root was unlucky. Another inch to the right and he’d still be there. It’s not even day 4 yet - we’ve got to bat this out today at least.

Crawley gone now decent knock for 60.

We really need another 150 runs yet to make this a possible winning score otherwise it could be curtains. 😞

Edit
Lucky there Stokes got away with that one.

I see Ollie Pope has been as consistent as ever. 2 innings, 3 balls, 0 runs. Never is and never was an international level cricketer.
