France bans British tourists

From Saturday due to concerns about rising covid cases. Probably sensible, but because it’s France you do wonder if it’s just another way to get back at us for leaving the eu.

More than just tourists as far as I can see, it's almost everyone.

Latest cases (per million) and Omicron share:
  • France: 742 (4.3%);
  • Germany: 597 (2.1%);
  • Netherlands: 932 (14.0%);
  • Spain: 448 (8.1%);
  • UK: 842 (2.4%);
On the face of it, yes it's Macron being a dick again.

The first of many European countries l suspect which will result in travel chaos for both travelers and the business again.
It's interesting isn't it? The goal posts move constantly to whatever the negative narrative is.

When deaths are high and cases are going down, it's all about the deaths.

When cases are high and currently deaths are extremely low, it's all about the cases.

When there is a struggle, it's a new random variant, how dangerous it is? The world has absolutely lost the ** plot.

Had a flight booked for the 27th to spend NY with my partner who lives in Paris. That's gone.

I thought this was why we were getting jabbed? Still restrictions? Hypocritical.

I wonder if the other countries are all still benefiting from being in the EU?

How did you arrive at your Omicron stats?

It's here: Our World in Data

In fact the rate at which it is spreading means those figures are probably completely out of date by now, I'd guess we're now at more like 40%, but the point is that in the context of this thread it's doubtful that the French have any better numbers, so the decision is as likely political as it is medical.
I must admit, the figures are very confusing, particularly as we are reporting 1000’s of Omicron cases and Spain and France are reporting 100’s. This is why, I believed, France has introduced the latest restrictions. As you say though, across the board, there must be many more cases across Europe and the UK than are being reported.

Yep.

The problem is those figures are looking back over about 2 or more weeks, but things are changing so rapidly they're next to useless for looking at the current situation.

About the only reliable figures I can suggest is that cases have gone from being stable at about 50,000 per day for months, but have suddenly shot up to 90,000 in a couple of days, so that extra 40,000 is likely Omicron's share of the total.

Why on earth is having a foreign holiday a priority now when we should all be ultra careful to protect ourselves and our family & friends? If you have relatives abroad then just Zoom them.

The virus is here too you know, in fact, depending upon where you go, you're probably safer overseas than you are here.

I read that us and the Danish sequence the samples far more than other European countries and therefore it looks like we also have far, far higher rates.

The likelihood is, it's as prevalent here as everywhere else; we just know about it.

Meanwhile, as somebody said, when HMG is trying to keep us all apart, why wouldn't the French ask us not to go.

Macron will be giving it the bigun' mind; he's an election to win.

True, although I think there's a work-around that allows you to test for a particular gene (s-gene positivity????) that acts as a proxy and allows us to avoid the full sequencing.

That said most of the EU is doing far less testing than us generally, so I doubt they're doing much of that either.

And of course, don’t forget, the French are obsessed with us, almost as much as we are obsessed with ourselves!!!

Hmmmm....... freedom of movement for deadly respiratory viruses and that's a good thing.

It's a novel argument, I'll grant you that, but not one I remember being advanced before the referendum, I wonder why.
You’re all over the place on this thread.

First you criticise France for closing its borders to British tourists. Then you’re arguing that freedom of movement is probably not a clever thing to have when there’s a pandemic of respiratory viruses. So presumably you must agree France made the right decision after all?

Then you post some stats that you claim prove Macron is being a dick but a few posts later you claim the same stats are “next to useless”. So can we rely on your stats to support your argument or not? And what is your argument anyway?

By the way have you commented on the Shropshire By Election thread yet?

Who really gives a toss?
I've had a self imposed ban on France for the best part of 20 years.
Italy, Spain and eastern Europe far nicer places to go.
Wizzer, you've obviously been to every part of France to make a statement like that.
Ever been to the Mediterranean, The Loire and other such places? Lovely country and wonderful rivers.
Can't wait to go when it's open again.

Just read that a new variant had been found in a region of France, So, should we now stop all the French from coming over here?

You'd support countries having control of their own borders surely?
Even if they are a nation which has EU membership ?

The French hospitality section aren't too pleased with the rule. Apparently around 34% of all hotel bookings are from British tourists next are the Belgians at 8%. The ski resorts are going to lose badly and the ferry companies aren't too happy.

And France is run by the unions, not that jumped up wanna be Napoleon

I think french baby is due to their govts perceived threat of import of Covid cases in the short term. As in the UK they're talking of trying to slow down Omicron to buy time for more vaccinations.

Having a great time in Nice at the moment , great weather , wonderful coastal scenery nearby, good food , and Pool won yesterday.

Heard the hun blitzkrieg variant is on the German borders. Expect French to offer eternal friendship any day.

What? France, part of the EU, controlling its own borders? Again!

Ere Bottle you do realise that the French and Germans have a great record of telling the EU to stuff it when it suits them?
