Frankie Boyle.

What is it with certain comedians thinking they can get away with jokes about rape and killing victims and one female celebrity in particular?

When you consider acts like Bernard Manning and others of his time were classed as persona non gratia (spelling) by those who didn't like his humour, yet little is said about this disgraceful excuse of a human being.

I refuse to publish the so called joke so you will have to research it yourselves. Try the Scotsman newspaper for starters.

They share the same left-wing politics, so get a free pass from the BBC and the rest of the left wing media, if anyone pro-Brexit said 10% of what they say then you can bet there would be "national outrage" and questions asked in parliament.

Frankie Boyle is brilliant, if people don't like his humour don't watch him.

Jimmy Carr summed it up at his next gig when he responded to the uproar about his joke about gypsy's:
"We are speaking, my friends, in the last chance saloon. What I am saying on stage this evening is barely acceptable now, in ten years, ** forget about it.
The joke that ends my career is already out there, It's on YouTube, Netflix or whatever, and it's fine until one day it ** isn't."
You are going to be able to tell your grandchildren about seeing this show tonight. You will say I saw a man and he stood on a stage and he made light of serious issues.
We used to call them jokes and people would laugh."

The context of his 'joke' was aimed at one female celebrity, and was absolutely disgusting in my book, I just hope it doesn't affect the poor woman. He actually said he would rape and kill her. To me that goes way above what is funny or acceptable. If you can defend that, then there is something seriously wrong with you. It is more like a threat of violence towards the person and should be dealt with as such.

Frankie also proves that so called "cancel culture" doesn't actually exist. It only exists if these twerps stop you talking. If you carry on talking then they have to hear you and you are uncancellable.

Bollocks.
If you say so, and I suppose you were one of those who was pleased when Carol Thatcher was reported to the BBC for saying to an Indian bloke, who didn't complain, 'isn't your hair fuzzy.' But, of course she was reported by one of the left wing luvies, Joe Brand, who, herself, has often overstepped the mark in some people's mind and got away with it.

It's a strange world we are now living in for those who believe in free speech, so long as it doesn't offend.

As Lytham says, it wasn't a joke as such, it was a comment during a routine about which subjects are acceptable or not to joke about, a very small part of it has been taken out of context.

There's something seriously wrong with you if you believe a newspaper headline.

Exactly, someone somewhere is offended by everything.
The worst type of people imo are the ones that are offended by something on someone else's behalf.

I wouldn't say I was pleased, more 'completely unaware' as I don't tend to go looking for things to be offended by and if I happen across them I don't become infuriated by a headline and rather more look in to the context, as you probably should have done here.

I find Frankie Boyle amusing, his comedy can also get you thinking. Don't know very much about Carole Thatchers TV career but my guess it would be a long time over by now even without the comments about somebody's hair!

Perhaps I'm rather old fashioned with my standards, for the modern day, but I still cannot condone what he said, whether it was a comment during the routine or a joke, it was all part of his act. So it seems we will have to agree to disagree.

Carol Thatcher only has a career because of her mother.

Comedy is under attack from all sides and it’s a shame. Many things we find funny are a bit edgy. What I can’t stand is people looking to find offence on behalf of other people.

Frankie Boyle and Jimmy Carr are both funny and the style of their show is to shock. Some people will find them offensive but like we used to say about tv you don’t like, there is an off button.

I think we need to be careful what we wish for. If we get rid of these kinds of comedians we will end up with ‘comedy’ like Mrs Browns boys and other puerile unfunny trash.

Let’s agree to tolerate things we don’t like a bit more so that we maintain the principle of choice.

Comedy is an art form. Watched Ricky Gervais' new one on netflix? Loads of offensive stuff, but it's funny as fuck. If you can't laugh you'll cry. What offends one doesn't offend all, and the nature of most comedy shows is offensive material. Where do you draw the line? If you don't like it don't watch it.

'When Boris Johnson had Covid he said there was a contingency plan in the event of his death, which is true, I bought fireworks. Obviously I didn't actually want him to die, the last thing we needed at that time was street parties...'
He recently said the leadership contest between Truss and Sunak was like tunneling out of R Kelly's house into Prince Andrews basement.

I think Frankie is very clever and very funny. If you’ve never watched him Curryman he isn’t just a comic telling jokes like on The Comedians. He builds up themes and layers and he can be thought provoking.

plus which everything is about context

With Bernard Manning, Colin Crompton, Ken Goodwin, Mike Reid and Jim Bowen, the Comedians didn't need the likes of Frankie Boyle.

I get that he's trying to shock but take that away and I just don't find him very funny, he's not for me anyway.

For anybody remotely interested in context the wider routine was about what is acceptable or not, and he is making a very meta point about how easy it is to offend people by taking a household name and linking it to a heinous crime. He was demonstrating IMO how it’s not so much the deeper meaning that creates controversy, but shock value and token phrases extrapolated in the right order.

Sad when people let tabloid headlines tell them what to be offended by, without actually viewing the material or attempting to understand its merit.

I personally get a toxic mixture of insulted intelligence and national shame when reminded of the existence of Michael McIntyre, but I don’t go complaining about it ☺️

Bernard Manning was offensive in a far deeper way than Frankie Boyle will ever be.

Bernard Manning was funnier than Frankie Boyle will ever be.
I gave an example of Manning’s racist “humour” (directed at Lenny Henry on Tiswas) earlier on this thread but see it’s been removed.

Anyway the hosts got their own back with the “speak your weight” gag.

That’s a ridiculous response CM, this thread needs to descend into insults and vitriol as everyone defends their own prejudices…..

I can't say I saw your example Mex but that it was removed from this forum doesn't tell me anything.
