From the Barnsley Message Board

A few more gems….

We look like an U15s team, they look like Man City.
It's been a mauling so far. Lucky to be only two down; could easily have been three or four.
We couldn’t live with them first half, their football was on a different planet.
I'm getting fed up of hearing Dembele's name
Look on the bright side. I love those corner flags. 😁

Cos we've waited an awful long time for this system to work ?
Cos there wasn't 14 passes before Grimshaw got it back ?
Because we went longer at times and didn't rely on possession stats.
Because some people were thinking where was this performance at Burton.....and on and on and on.
It's almost as if coming back to a relegated club and reinstalling confidence and a system takes time or something.

No I think the Critchmeisters stubbornness in sticking to his 5 at the back approach has cost us this season.

To be fair to Critchley if he had have had Byers, Coulson and Rhodes available all season then my point would be a moot one.

It does take time and footballers are not generally the brightest people on the planet but, as someone sat near me said this afternoon... It shouldn't take 45 games! Critchley clearly "took the shackles off" today when they shouldn't have been there in the first place. We've seen what this team is capable of a few times this season and, in my opinion, the one thing that's been holding them back has been the manager!

Add in that, Critch had to start with a squad with only a few players that knew his system.
Most of the season has been rebuilding his squad and coaching them how he wants them to play.
Man management of a group of men and getting them to do all the things that are needed from them is very hard work … and then he had to polish them into a cohesive team.

I doubt there are many supporters who have experienced a project like this.

The squad showed a lot of good and bad along the way, yesterday showed how far they have come.

And then he put the shackles back on by taking a striker off and putting on the totally useless Olly Nogood. Critchley's inability to effect positive change by way of astute substitutions is still glaringly obvious to see.

It’s why an owner must choose a manager, allow them time to develop the squad and not panic in season 1.

Yes there are many examples of managers doing it in first season but they are far less than those who’ve had time to develop a squad and remove players who are under contract for 2 or 3 years for players that work to their plan. He was guessing in the summer. By Jan he knew what was lacking. By now he will know what did and didn’t work in the transfers.

It’s not Man City so what % of what he managed to sign matches his wish list?

He knew a majority of the squad when he came back, has spent 60ish games trying to plug players into a rigid system and way of playing. He stumbled on things that worked by accident, Dale as a wing back for example, Carey in a freeish role, CJ with a license to run, letting Marv defend, etc etc. Yesterday bringing Norburn on for an attacker who had been menacing their defence when they had possession, was the sign to me anyway that he cant read a game in progress, and he couldn't see that byers was tiring, and coulson had an issue that was hindering him making the midfield less effective.

There is no clear defining character of play under critchley. The dull "possession based game" which is largely played in our defensive third leading to silly mistakes and conceding daft goals is usually very arbitrary. He obviously still doesn't fully appreciate players strengths or weaknesses, and I think we've been very lucky in that we have a number of players who have pulled out individual performances and goals in games where we were pretty turgid.

We are not man city and don't have a corrupt national wealth fund breaking financial rules to acquire whatever players he wants, as a coach / manager he has to work with the resources to hand and yet he chooses to try and copy pep and klopp in a rigid system not suited to the players or the division.

All well and good but we’re on course to finish 4 points worse off than when we got promoted under him. That season we thought he was a footballing genius. Funny how it works out…

I think football genius may be pushing it a bit, but just think where we would be with those 4 extra points this season. Think Fleetwood,Burton, Port Vale, Cheltenham, Cambridge etc etc and the turgid predictable football we have played away from home this season. Maybe the " football genius " should have stuck to the 442 that brought him success last time he was here.

Barnsley message board is like our board only EVEN MORE. Whingy, whiny n knee jerk. Sack the manager , sack the board , players are rubbish , Collins sets us up too negatively, players played out of position, waste of a season etc etc.
Sounded mighty might familiar and they're in ( maybe only by the skin of their teeth at the moment) the hallowed play off positions .
As I said , just like reading this board only ramped up to an even higher level of general dissatisfaction

It's a general phenomenon these days.

A comment from another Barnsley fan - The league is bad...is purely your opinion, don't forget though other teams have some very good players...Blackpool for instance have found that Dembele kid, they also have Rhodes and Byers...all three would walk into our team.

If only we DID own those three.

Hope you are not too cracked up, btf...😜

There has been a lot of negativity towards the coach lately and I don't mind admitting to having been openly critical of his team selections, formations and tactics. My comment was in reference to that specifically, whilst we are still in the mix for a play-off spot.
